Astrill VPN (review) was founded in 2009 by Astrill Systems Corp, which is based in Seychelles.
Why is that important to a VPN user?
Because there are no data retention laws within your VPN jurisdiction.
But that’s not why I posted this Astrill review.
I wanted to understand all the good and bad things so that I could provide you with a well-informed overview of Astrill VPN.
Is it an honest VPN to remain anonymous on a public Wi-Fi network to protect your personal data? Does it really hide your IP?
Let’s find this out …
Background on Astrill VPN in a Nutshell
Astrill’s website is aesthetically pleasing and displays the features of its service so that it is easy to get to know.
At first glance, I realized how easy it is for brand new users to sign up for your service; just enter your email address and you are good to go. In fact, Astrill boldly claims that you will be able to use your VPN in 3 minutes.
In general, it seems to be a trustworthy website.
If you read user feedback on Astrill’s blog, though, you seem to be biassed because the business review we sent you was not released on their site even after several months.
However, the video was taken in 2014. Isn’t it true that Astrill has progressed since then? Let’s take a look…

Very Expensive Pricing, $8.33/mo
Astrill offers a 7-day free trial on their plans. Awesome, right?
The other great little news is that Astrill offers equivalent features for each plan. Therefore, each package includes access to each server, unlimited bandwidth, and all other available features. But the packages include access for various amounts of your time. Here’s a quick breakdown.
The one-month plan will cost you $ 15.90 per month.
This plan is ideal for a user who just wants to start Astrill without making a long-term commitment.
The six-month package costs $ 11.65 per month.
This is a 26% savings compared to the three-month package. You will spend a total of $ 69.90.
The one-year package costs $ 8.33 per month.
The one-year package comes with a total of $ 99.90. You will save 47% here. So if you recognize that you would like to use Astrill long term, this is usually the simplest value.
On their website, the company’s price options look like this:
Astrill offers a 7-day money-back guarantee, along with several payment options, including:
- Credit/debit cards
- Bank wire transfer
In general, Astrill’s price is not the most profitable on the market. In fact, it costs tons. Even quite ExpressVPN which is documented alongside the simplest VPNs.
Features, Compatibility, and Servers
Astrill has unlimited bandwidth, regardless of the plan you select. The main thing they brag about on their “features” page is their privacy technology.
Astrill is available on all major platforms:
- Mac (not 100% sure if on older Mac versions)
- and Android platforms.
They allow 5 simultaneous connections per account. this is often specialized compared to other VPN services.
Astrill VPN has 365 servers distributed across 64 countries.
It may not reach the thousands that ExpressVPN has. However, it is also much more than the 36 that Avira VPN currently offers.
Its number of servers has also steadily increased over the years. So I hope they keep adding servers. They have pretty much doubled the number of servers since early 2014.
Their list of servers is extremely long and they offer connections within the hottest cities in the world:
- United States
Astrill offers an online kill switch option for many plans.
This can help protect your data if your connection drops unexpectedly. That way, your entire browsing session would not be exposed to those who are listening.
Also, you get unlimited torrents without restrictions.
That’s the key because a VPN can help protect what you’re downloading from your nosy Internet Service Provider (ISP). If they see you constantly downloading massive files, very soon they will start to throttle your connection to help reduce pressure on your resources.
VPNs also help protect you from the very people you might be downloading content from. This way, you won’t be hospitable to bad actors on an equivalent torrent network.
Last but not least, Astrill seems to feature with the DD-WRT routers as well. which will help you fix the two device limit lower than usual.
But instead of offering a setup wizard on their site like many other VPN providers, they only sell routers with Astrill already installed.
This is an irritating touch, to be honest.
Pros of Astrill
For at least eight years, Astrill has been around. As a result, I had high aspirations about what I would achieve. The below is a list of my own favorites.
SSL 256-bit encryption and a wide range of protocol choices
Privacy is the favorite problem of VPN software. Nothing else matters if your encryption or logging policies aren’t up to scratch.
Astrill offers 256-bit SSL encryption on every plan you need.
This means that you will have military-grade protection, even though you are only testing Astrill through a free trial. Although there isn’t a big difference, some VPNs only go along with 128-bit encryption (hint: Zenmate)
Astrill also has one of the most important lists of protocols available that we have seen.
Seriously, check this out:
- Cisco IPSec
That’s great news for just about any potential use case.
The first two, OpenWeb and StealthVPN, are literally proprietary protocols created by Astrill.
The main feature of OpenWeb is that it supposedly helps you bypass deep packet inspection (DPI), which should reduce the chances that the ISP will slow down and detect Netflix.
StealthVPN, on the other hand, was designed to help you escape automated firewall systems.
So best of all, there really are some things for everyone with Astrill’s protocol options.
They have little impact on the speed of your Internet service.
Astrill claims that their speeds are incredibly fast. a bit like everyone else. I tried them out for myself so that it is not necessary.
These are the results of my speed tests for Astrill on US and EU servers.
- Ping: 182 ms
- Download: 78.65 Mbps
- Upload: 18.99 Mbps
- Ping: 44 ms
- Download: 69.08 Mbps
- Upload: 53.30 Mbps
These speeds are pretty good! Download speeds are especially consistent.
The loading speed of US servers could improve, but these results are better than other VPNs on the market.
Astrill is extremely simple to download and install. the location identifies which operating system you are using and displays a download button automatically.
There is also no guesswork on how to use Astrill’s installation wizard. Once Astrill has been downloaded to your device, the interface usually looks like this:
All you have to try is to enter your email and password to log in.
Once you are logged in, you will select whether you want to use the OpenVPN, OpenWeb, or StealthVPN tunneling protocol.
You will immediately see an on / off button, also as data for the server you are connected to.
To change your server, simply select one from the menu.
With Astrill, you will apply DNS leak protection, IPv6 leak protection, and WebRTC IP leak protection.
DNS and IPv6 leak protection is automatically activated upon download.
My main complaint here? The client seems pretty dated, to be honest.
All the essentials are there. But it is not the simplest to use nor the most clever to appear.
Overall, Astrill scores 5/10 for usability.
Free trial + money-back guarantee
Astrill is one of the few VPN apps that offers a free trial and money-back guarantee. Usually, only one or the opposite can be obtained.
But now, you will give Astrill services a spin for a couple of days before signing up.
Then once you have done so, you will have a few more days to make a decision on whether or not you want to keep the service.
While the company doesn’t mention Netflix by name, it does have the power to “unblock” favorite websites. In our testing, we found that Astrill was ready to connect to Netflix through three servers in three different countries as well as to unblock Netflix’s geo-restrictions.
Astrill servers unblocking Netflix:
- United States: Chicago
- United Kingdom: London
Astrill servers blocked by Netflix:
- United States: New York
Cons of Astrill
Some possible logging
Astrill’s website appears to say that it does not keep data logs.
And, though they promise not to “sell, rent, or exchange your personal information with anyone,” they also announce that they gather data in order to personalize your experience with items like “online shopping and interactive communications.”
That last sentence looks like they are using your personal information to target the ads, a bit like another free VPN.
I bet you feel equivalent, right?
Astrill VPN pricing is above average
Some of the VPN services I’ve reviewed so far will only cost you around two to three dollars a month for a full year. which means your total bill is roughly $ 30-40. batch, right?
Unfortunately, Astrill doesn’t compare to that. Its current one-year price is $ 5.83 per month.
That’s twice the opposing options (ZoogVPN and VPN Unlimited), making it a bit pricey compared to its alternatives.
The three-month option also costs about $ 10 / month.
Again, that’s high compared to other options. Many other VPN services will offer you a month-to-month option for double-digit pricing. You better make sure you would like to talk to them at the end of the day because it is getting expensive.
No 24/7 Live Chat
I was excited to learn that Astrill offers live chat.
A lot of other VPN services only offer a ticket system. which means you are looking at a full day in most cases to urge an answer to an easy question.
I decided to take your live chat service to give you a full review.
All you have to enter is your name, email, and message to urge you to get started.
You can also select the department your question applies to.
Here is the question I posted:
Once you hit send, you will receive this message.
After what seemed like hours, another notification appeared:
I went ahead and clicked the “leave a message” option to see how long you’d like to hear something when taking that route. I got a helpful email for a few hours.
That reaction time could be normal for a ticketing or email-based network. But “live” chat?
It was terrible.
You’re happier just sending a message and waiting for a response instead of sitting inside the live chat window for an unknown amount of your time.
Do I Recommend Astrill?
Of course, it is not a nasty VPN. based on my tests I would rate it around 7/10.
However, if you forced me to choose just one VPN provider, Astrill wouldn’t be. Sorry.
