CyberGhost Review in 2021: Features, Pricing & More!

CyberGhost (Review) may be a VPN provider based in Romania.

They’ve been around for seven years, were only recently bought, and have since grown to become one of the biggest VPN providers.

They include all the features you expected, like AES 256-bit encryption and OpenVPN (along with other optional tunneling protocols like IPSec).

Its pricing structure is also quite cheap, almost like NordVPN.

These are all the pros and cons that we have discovered after several rounds of testing.

Cyberghost Pros +

Located in Romania (out of 14 eyes)

Founded in 2011 and operated by a team of 55 people located in Bucharest, Romania, CyberGhost (recently acquired by Robert Knapp and Crossrider Limited) currently has more than 15 million users, which is an impressive statistic indeed.

This also means that they are also outside of 14 Eyes, which means that their data (if they had it) would not be shared with intelligence agencies in other countries of the world.

All Essential Features Available

  • Hide IP: Yes
  • Kill switch: yes
  • Maximum Devices: 7
  • Total Servers: 3,999 (last verified July 24, 2019)
  • Total countries: 60 (last verification on July 24, 2019)

CyberGhost is VPN software that hides your IP, encrypts and anonymizes your internet activity, and also keeps you safe every time you use Wi-Fi.

Their network covers 60 countries and comprises 3,999 server positions in the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Asia (although their presence in Asia is certainly sparse with only a couple of servers in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore).

Their VPN service is compatible with tons of devices, including:

  • Windows
  • Android
  • Mac
  • ios
  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • fireTV

CyberGhost also helps the users to align a custom reference to their Linux devices or routers if you know what you’re doing (yes, it will connect them to your router).

Additionally, CyberGhost supports all major protocols, including OpenVPN, L2TP, and IPSec. So you are looking at best-in-class AES-256 encryption standards to keep all your devices safe and secure.

Strict No-Logging Policy

Many VPN providers advertise “zero logs”. However, once you investigate the fine print buried in their Terms of Service, you realize just how far this statement is from reality.

Many VPN companies record your data, and although it is usually for the benign purpose of improving their services, during all | one between | one in each of “> one of the most important reasons to take a stand on a VPN is to limit intrusions on your privacy.

This doesn’t exactly work if the intrusive third party is your own VPN provider.

Fortunately, CyberGhost does not waive its registration policy.

This is what they should mention on their website:

No Leaks Detected

There are many things that I like about CyberGhost. If you were to make a checklist of everything you would like from a VPN, CyberGhost has them ALL.

No information is recorded. Its Romanian jurisdiction protects users. Netflix works. Like torrents. It even supports TOR and other proxy services.

When we tried this program, we loved it. There’s a reason it ranks number seven on our list of the highest VPNs in the world.

The icing on an already impressive ice cream wonder is the incontrovertible fact that it is often a tight, leak-free system.

We put CyberGhost through the doorbell several times and found that our original IP was completely protected.

We also ran a test on the CyberGhost installation program to ensure it didn’t infect our system with viruses.

Fortunately, it was also completely clean.

Great User Experience and Easy Installation

The simple use of CyberGhost is excellent.

It took me a total of about 5 minutes to install, start, and use CyberGhost on my Windows device. And the comments endorsed by other users, this experience is quite consistent no matter what device you are using.

You can sign up for an account without having to buy anything in advance. Once you have done that, you will be directed to a panel like the one shown below:

You can choose a server from the drop-down list at the bottom or let CyberGhost automatically connect you to your best server location. This allows you to browse anonymously in just a couple of seconds.

If you want to modify the servers, just click the yellow arrow in the lower-left corner. which will open a server menu like this:

From there, you will either select a replacement server from the full list or focus on servers that are specifically designed for torrenting and streaming.

The app’s design is crisp and clean. Things are so clearly spelled out that even your grandparents could use them.

CyberGhost even has a feature that allows users to automatically launch a secure private browser with the push of a button.

An overall great experience.

Compatible with TOR (and most other proxies)

The Orion Router (or TOR) is an anonymous network that transmits your data through multiple servers, making it virtually impossible to determine who you are or where you are from.

Depending on the country you are browsing from, the power to overlay your VPN with the TOR network can literally save your life.

Fortunately, CyberGhost VPN supports TOR.

This allows users to push the edge of total anonymity as possible and can be a huge advantage for any VPN user located in countries with strict censorship laws.

Safe for Torrenting & Works with Netflix

Torrenting

While many VPNs are reluctant to actively promote torrent / P2P power on their servers (hint: TunnelBear), CyberGhost is not among them.

CyberGhost not only allows torrenting, but it is also one of its main selling points.

Once you have started CyberGhost, click on the yellow servers menu to the left of the client:

That will open the full-service menu. Once there, you will notice that on the left side there is an option labeled “For torrents”. Click here to determine all CyberGhost P2P optimized servers:

Double click on the server you would like to use and torrent to your heart’s delight.

To their credit, CyberGhost has done everything in their power to create torrenting smoothly and easily.

Netflix Unblocking Feature

Cyberghost has dedicated a unique streaming server that keeps changing your IP address every time Netflix tries to the crackdown.

It worked for me when I tried it. After having a short talk with their customer service agent, I was able to validate this:

Cyberghost-customer-support-chat

First, I looked up CyberGhost’s streaming servers and looked for people optimized for Netflix:

To make life easier, if you type “Netflix” in the search bar, it will find those four servers for you and you don’t need to look through the entire list:

The first two servers I checked were the UK and us. Both worked perfectly. Unfortunately, he used to be less successful with the two opposites. Netflix is constantly improving its game in its quest to block VPNs, but I used to be happy to make sure that at least half of these servers were still working.

Seven Device Connection Limit

CyberGhost used to offer only a device connection limit, even for a few premium users, prior to its purchase by Robert Knapp and Crossrider Limited.

Fortunately, that was one of the main positive changes they made. Most of the VPNs we’ve reviewed will allow a minimum of three simultaneously.

Initially, CyberGhost increased its connection number to 5, which was a huge improvement.

But we are happy to report that as of September 2018, CyberGhost has increased its limit even further to seven devices, no matter what plan you are simply using.

This is a welcome upgrade that exposes many doors for the typical user.

Live Chat Customer Service

Good customer service is hard to find in the world of VPNs.

It should not be like that. It’s not necessarily that difficult or anything. But the overwhelming majority are either (1) careless or (2) terrible or (3) both.

So when you really do cross that line towards excellence, they are worth praising them a lot.

Buckle up, because I’m about to start hoarding.

When we first reviewed CyberGhost, it’s fair to mention that we weren’t huge fans of their customer network. it had been faulty and nearly unusable. We gave them some tough but fair reviews.

Well, it’s like they’re listening.

CyberGhost has made some recent advancements in this field and it is paying off in droves. For starters, they added live chat.

It is not like a live chat that takes an hour to respond. But instant and fast messaging.

Anyone who needs help should click on the chat box in the lower right corner of their screen.

Clicking there exposes the chatbox, where you enter your name, email address, and subject.

The service connects quickly. there is a virtual queue, but it used to be in the first position instantly. A CyberGhost rep rushed into the service and we started talking.

More

I asked about torrent services and what servers TOR could be used on:

The response was quick and informative. There is no copy and paste response as we get from a couple of other people. I even tried to trip them up, asking for various services in sequence, like unblocking Netflix streaming.

Razvan handled each one deftly. Once we were done, he said goodbye and logged out. Then I immediately received an email from CyberGhost when I logged out with a full transcript of the chat session.

There is nothing to criticize here. it had been an epic home run.

Bravo, CyberGhost. You are on a special level here.

CyberGhost Cons

Questionable Parent Company

As with any product on the market, you have to look like the company behind a VPN to know what to expect.

CyberGhost was sold to Kape Technologies (formerly known as Crossrider Plc), an Israeli-based ad tech company famous for creating and distributing Malware.

It didn’t take me long to search for articles warning the general public about the malware that Kape Technologies is still spreading. Malwarebytes even posted a roadside brief to remove a Crossrider malware. Clearly, you cannot trust this company along with your data.

This irony did not go unnoticed by CyberGhost. After the purchase, the CEO of CyberGhost himself admitted that the two companies had opposite goals.

CyberGhost seeks to protect user data and privacy like a VPN. Crossrider seeks to obtain user data to generate money as a billboard technology company.

Ironic, right?

I also recognized that the rebrand from Crossrider to Kape Technologies was actually a very clever move. Kape CEO Ido Erlichman admitted that the decision to rebrand was thanks to “the strong association with the company’s past activities.”

Simply put, CyberGhost’s parent company cannot be trusted, and they realize it.

Not the Fastest VPN

As long as you are in the market for a “cheap VPN”, you will expect slower download and upload times.

Here’s our benchmark (no VPN connection):

Speed benchmark
Article: CyberGhost Review in 2021

Unfortunately for CyberGhost, unless you are employing a free service, it should never have to affect such slow speeds.

Slow-server-speeds
Article: CyberGhost Review in 2021

US Server (New York)

  • Ping: 189ms
  • Download: 18.41 Mbps
  • Upload: 7.12 Mbps

EU Server (Amsterdam)

  • Ping: 41ms
  • Download: 51.10 Mbps
  • Upload: 21.10 Mbps

Asia Server (Hong Kong)

  • Ping: 299ms
  • Download: 4.00 Mbps
  • Upload: 4.07 Mbps

UK Server (London)

  • Ping: 69ms
  • Download: 5.63 Mbps
  • Upload: 15.65 Mbps

In short, while CyberGhost’s speeds are nothing to brag about.

They are surely faster than other paid VPNs like PureVPN. But our recommended ExpressVPN is almost 2x faster!

When it comes to speed, they rank somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Third-Party Reviews Are Historically Pretty Rough

I decided to go through several of the recent reviews on Reddit and Quora to make sure we were only seeing a one-sided experience. According to most sources (who weren’t motivated by a good commission check), my experience was pretty standard.

For example…

Cyberghost-Review

Here’s another one.

Cyberghost-Reddit-Review

There were some reviews that had a more positive outlook on CyberGhost’s services, however, most of them were clearly posted by people with a clear lack of experience with VPN providers.

Alleged Security Concerns

The latest issue I came across with CyberGhost is an alleged security issue that has cropped up since early 2016.

While there has been a lot of controversy surrounding CyberGhost’s root certificates and therefore the possibility that their “No Logging” policy is not being enforced, so far my findings on this topic are inconclusive.

Most of the issues that have cropped up were quickly resolved or explained by the CyberGhost team.

While I have no real reason to suspect that CyberGhost is wrong or to believe that there is any violation of their privacy agreement, there have been too many allegations to miss this particular point.

CyberGhost Pricing & Quick Facts

cyberghost pricing options
Article: CyberGhost Review in 2021

CyberGhost offers a real month-to-month plan for $ 12.99 a month. However, the simplest thank you for saving is planning one of your options for the long term.

The cost of your 3-year package is ultra-low: $ 2.50 / month for a three-year commitment. This places them among the most profitable options on the market.

More

They also offer a good variety of payment methods. You get quality debit and credit options, PayPal and BitPay, and cash too.

While this might be an extreme touch for many users, this feature may be available to users who are concerned about the anonymity of their transaction. (For example, people who buy CyberGhost in a country with censorship laws and VPN restrictions.)

CyberGhost’s money-back guarantee is also self-explanatory.

If you have a package that is more than one year old, you have 45 days to cancel and get a refund, and if you choose the monthly alternative, you have 14 days. For any of their goods, they have a “no questions answered” approach. That’s why we appreciate them endorsing the products they market.

They will even stick to this when their “ISP is clogging VPN connections”, for example. So it’s not even their fault that the VPN isn’t working for you. They will still provide the refund.

You can get a refund by browsing CyberGhost.com (if that’s where the purchase was made).

Otherwise, go back to the individual reseller if you used one of them (such as Digital River / Shareit). Understandably, they don’t have any control over the reseller’s transactions, so they should be ready to help you directly. you may just want to clarify if they match CyberGhost’s “no questions asked” or need their own refund policy overriding it.

  • No registration: yes.
  • Ease of VPN software: Signing up and using the app is quite simple and easy.
  • Hidden fees and clauses: none.
  • Upsells: no upsells.
  • Instant access after payment: Yes.
  • DNS leaks: none.
  • Jurisdiction: Romania.
  • Protocols: OpenVPN, IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP.
  • Kill switch: yes.

Do I Recommend CyberGhost?

Yes.

To be honest, we weren’t that excited about this service just a couple of months ago. But it seems that in the last few months, CyberGhost has turned things around.

They experienced constructive feedback and completely changed some aspects. The live chat and customer service experience we had was like the day and night before.

CyberGhost has always been a solid VPN option. It is a strict no-logging policy and the Romanian jurisdiction keeps your information safe and secure. If it provides all the essential functions of a VPN with a great user experience.

Plus, it’s a leak-free system that works with Netflix, TOR, and torrent services.

It was also a breath of fresh air to increase their connections to seven simultaneous devices.

There are a couple of questions surrounding its historical performance. Some users have had negative experiences. There could be some alleged security issues.

Overall, if you want to be safe, you will be most satisfied with NordVPN (ranked # 1), Surfshark (ranked # 2), or ExpressVPN (ranked # 3) in our best VPN guide.
