Fastest VPN Services in 2021 – Ranked!

Fastest VPN increase security but slow down.

That is unfortunate. And no thanks for solving one without the opposite.

The additional VPN funnel to secure your entire connection adds layers of encrypted security, inevitably slowing down the server.

But how do you find a fast VPN?

The good news is that the simplest live VPNs see only a negligible drop in performance.

The bad news is that a lot of the bad guys mine numerous resources, making web browsing a trial and streaming HD video content nearly impossible.

It could be the best anonymous system known to man, with no registration, unlimited torrents, Netflix functionality, and a killer tag.

But if it’s killing 95% of your speed, it’s not worth it.

More

There are four main reasons why a VPN will slow down your internet speed at a slow rate:

  1. Encryption: When a VPN sends information over the Internet, it locks it in advanced encryption to prevent prying eyes from seeing our activity and data. High-quality encryption consumes tons of CPU power, so the better the encryption, the faster it is getting scared off again. That’s why we say that slowing down is the cost of security.
  2. Physical Distance from VPN Server – Signal deteriorates with distance, so where you are because it belongs to your VPN’s server will dictate the loss of speed.
  3. User overload: the more people pull a server, the more bandwidth is consumed. Low bandwidth means low performance, which also means low speed. This is generally not a problem for higher quality VPN systems, because they are designed to handle the load.
  4. Your ISP’s speed: It stands to reason that the slower the speed you start with, the slower your VPN speed will be. The loss of speed is more noticeable in systems that, at first, were not obtaining high speeds.

We tested over 70 VPN speeds using speedtest.net. We use an Internet connection of 100 Mbps upstream and 55 Mbps downstream (cable). More information about our evaluation process can be found here.

The 7 Fastest VPNs in 2021

We have reviewed 74 VPNs so far. Some were amazing. Most were “meh”. And a couple of them were downright shocking.

It’s worth noting that only one of those VPNs is in our top ten. Just one other individual is in the top twenty.

How can it be? Let’s find out!

PersonalVPN

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 20/74
  • EU download speed: 73.78 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 125.58 Mbps
  • Registration policy: register certain information
  • Leaks: IP leaks detected
  • Torrent download: not allowed
  • Netflix: it didn’t work

This is the fastest VPN we have seen. With much.

Look at these results:

US Server:

PersonalVPN US server results
  • Ping: 118ms
  • Download: 125.53 Mbps (45% faster)
  • Upload: 29.38 Mbps (13% slower)

EU Server:

PersonalVPN EU server results
  • Ping: 118ms
  • Download: 73.78 Mbps (15% slower)
  • Upload: 40.69 Mbps (21% faster)

The download speeds on the US servers were actually higher than our benchmark!

To put it mildly:

That is incredible.

Besides speed, there are also many things that I like.

Witopia also offers four different VPN tunneling protocols (OpenVPN, L2TP, IPSec, and PPTP), in addition to bulletproof AES-256 encryption. This VPN doesn’t get mad when it comes to security.

Unfortunately, there are a few gaps in the system.

To begin with, they record your information. As much. There have been many IP leaks, exposing our true location and breaking the anonymity of the merchandise.

And while those speeds were incredible, the mere fact that you just can’t watch Netflix or torrent means you can’t really get the full effect.

This is the fastest VPN we have ever seen.

Hide My IP

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 43/74
  • EU download speed: 81.66 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 81.61 Mbps
  • Registration policy: some registrations
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrent download: allows you to download torrents
  • Netflix: does not work with Netflix

Our Hide My IP EU and US speed tests were almost identical in terms of download speeds. That’s an honest thing, which shows that they are ready to consistently post high server speeds.

EU Speed Test:

HideMyIP EU speed test results
  • Ping: 44 ms
  • Download: 81.61 Mbps (16% slower)
  • Upload: 20.36 Mbps (61% slower)

US Speed Test:

HideMyIP USA speed test results
  • Ping: 113 ms
  • Download: 81.66 Mbps (16% slower)
  • Upload: 19.99 Mbps (62% slower)

Our benchmark means that your speeds may only drop a couple of percentage points with Hide My IP. you almost certainly won’t even notice it, to be honest.

We also found no leaks in the slightest. So it is a robust system.

Where does it fail then?

Unfortunately, Hide My IP thinks it is okay to record your information. They do not track your activity but retain some of your personal data.

It allows unrestricted torrenting, but none of the servers we tested worked with Netflix. So that’s a bummer.

Also, they are located right in the center of the 5-Eyes Surveillance Alliance, which is an agreement between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to share intelligence on espionage.

So if Hide My IP increases the knowledge that they are recording, it is going to share it with four other governments.

Private Tunnel

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 32/74
  • EU download speed: 90.59 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 69.29 Mbps
  • Registration policy: some registrations
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrent download: no torrent download
  • Netflix: does not work with Netflix

The combined speed of Private Tunnel placed them as the third fastest VPN on our list.

EU Speed Test:

Private Tunnel EU speed test results
  • Ping: 35ms
  • Download: 90.59 Mbps (6.6% slower)
  • Upload: 46.37 Mbps (12.6% slower)

US Speed Test:

Private Tunnel USA speed test results
  • Ping: 121ms
  • Download: 69.29 Mbps (28.6% slower)
  • Upload: 24.62 Mbps (53.6% slower)

The EU test was much better than the US test, but still, it had been a solid start across the board.

Not only is this VPN fast, but this company created the OpenVPN protocol (today’s industry-standard protocol).

So they are like celebrities in the cybersecurity space.

However, there are a couple of problems.

Your local US jurisdiction can be a problem for those who don’t want their data shared across the world.

And for a VPN with such blazing speed, they don’t provide official torrent support and Netflix crashed on all five servers we checked.

It may be the third-fastest VPN we’ve seen.

Private Internet Access

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 9/74
  • EU download speed: 81.46 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 77.56 Mbps
  • Registration policy: no registration
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: does not work with Netflix

Private Internet Access is the best-ranked overall VPN on this list.

We rated this product because it is the 9th VPN we reviewed. That’s right.

The speeds were impressive, and it shouldn’t surprise us.

We tried a variety of servers and were very impressed. Have a look :

EU Speed Test:

PIA USA speed test
  • Ping: 41ms
  • Download: 81.46 Mbps (15% slower)
  • Upload: 40.30 Mbps (29% slower)

US Speed Test:

PIA speed test US
  • Ping: 118ms
  • Download: 77.56 Mbps (19% slower)
  • Upload: 36.75 Mbps (34% slower)

Those speeds, including a strict no-logging policy, full torrenting, and no leakage, made this an incredible option.

Of course, they weren’t perfect.

None of the servers we tested worked with Netflix, to begin with, and its US jurisdiction creates some surveillance problems. Check out our full review.

BolehVPN

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 34/74
  • EU download speed: 88.41 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 62.85 Mbps
  • Log policy: log traffic
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: 1/5 worked with Netflix

BolehVPN produced slightly mixed results.

Upload speeds were consistent across both servers. But EU download speeds were significantly faster than the US.

Have a look.

EU Speed Test:

BolehVPN EU speed test results
  • Ping: 47ms
  • Download: 88.41 Mbps (9% slower)
  • Upload: 36.63 Mbps (31% slower)

US Speed Test:

BolehVPN USA speed test results
  • Ping: 117 ms
  • Download: 62.85 Mbps (35% slower)
  • Upload: 35.38 Mbps (38% slower)

Also, they allow torrenting and one of the servers worked with Netflix. So you can take full advantage of these powerful speeds.

So why don’t we recommend this VPN in our review?

It logs some information, presents a limited number of servers, and we had an overall clunky experience working with the app.

VPN.ac

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 46/74
  • EU download speed: 90.22 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 58.53 Mbps
  • Registration policy: register certain information
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrent Download: Torrenting Limited
  • Netflix: does not work with Netflix

VPN.ac produced blazing-fast speeds in the EU and pretty good in the US.

EU Speed Test:

VPN.ac speed test results in EU
  • Ping: 33 ms
  • Download: 90.22 Mbps (7% slower)
  • Upload: 48.76 Mbps (8% slower)

US Speed Test:

VPN.ac speed test results in US
  • Ping: 115 ms
  • Download: 58.53 Mbps (40% slower)
  • Upload: 25.60 Mbps (51% slower)

No IP leaks were found during this VPN and they don’t log any important information. (Just your email address, which is not enough to detect it).

They do, however, restrict their torrent services to a few servers. And none of the servers we tried were Netflix-compatible. With such amazing pace, it’s a shame.

Generally, they were only ready to be available at number 46 of 74.

Astrill

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 25/74
  • EU download speed: 69.08 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 78.65 Mbps
  • Registration policy: register certain information
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: 3/5 worked with Netflix

Rounding out our list of the seven fastest VPNs comes Astrill, a solid option in the middle of the road that doesn’t slow down the server.

EU Speed Test:

Astrill speed test results in EU
  • Ping: 44 ms
  • Download: 69.08 Mbps (29% slower)
  • Upload: 53.30 Mbps (0.6% faster)

US Speed Test:

Astrill Speed test US
  • Ping: 182 ms
  • Download: 78.65 Mbps (19% slower)
  • Upload: 18.99 Mbps (64% slower)

Astrill VPN works well with torrents. And this was also the simplest option for streaming services (3 of the 5 Netflix servers worked) on this list.

Unfortunately, some shady log policies in their privacy policy undermine the great results we saw.

The 3 Slowest VPNs in 2021

You have seen the simplest.

Now here are the rest. Or worse, when it comes to speed.

These last three VPNs slow down at an alarming rate. But they are not all bad. In fact, one of them even ranks above several of the previous VPN services above.

This is how they move.

Avira Phantom

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 33/74
  • EU download speed: 6.98 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 4.34 Mbps
  • Registration Policy – Unclear Registration Policy
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: 1/5 worked with Netflix

There is little doubt about it.

Avira Phantom can be a slow program. they have some positive features, but the speeds are downright abysmal.

EU Speed Test:

Avira EU speed test
  • Ping: 40ms
  • Download: 6.98 Mbps (93% slower)
  • Upload: 9.02 Mbps (83% slower)

US Speed Test:

Avira US speed test
  • Ping: 194 ms
  • Download: 4.34 Mbps (96% slower)
  • Upload: 2.23 Mbps (96% slower)

That is ridiculously slow.

That said, torrenting is allowed and one in 5 servers tested worked with Netflix.

But, the loss of speed, including a suspicious logging policy, caused us to expire this one.

Hide All IP

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 49/74
  • EU download speed: 5.31 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 2.58 Mbps
  • Registration policy: no registration
  • Leaks: no leaks
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: 3/5 worked with Netflix

Hide All IP doesn’t just hurt your speed. He guts it with a rusty kitchen knife.

This Hong Kong-based VPN slows you down by up to 94%.

EU Speed Test:

Hide ALL IP EU speed test
  • Ping: 74 ms
  • Download: 5.1 Mbps (94.5% slower)
  • Upload: 3.16 Mbps (94% slower)

US Speed Test:

Hide ALL IP US speed test
  • Ping: 149 ms
  • Download: 2.58 Mbps (97% slower)
  • Upload: 1.07 (98% slower)

This was a flawed VPN in all respects, with questionable logging policies, Chinese jurisdiction, and only one connection per account. On their poorly translated website, they tout their ability to offer geo-blocked streaming services.

We also discovered that Netflix only operated on one (of five) servers. They also allow torrent downloads to be done indefinitely.

But both will suffer such slow speeds.

Betternet

Fastest VPN Services in 2021
Article: Fastest VPN Services in 2021
  • Overall ranking: 69/74
  • EU download speed: 3.18 Mbps
  • US Download Speed: 2.53 Mbps
  • Registration policy: some registrations
  • Leaks: IP leaks detected
  • Torrenting: Torrenting allowed
  • Netflix: did not work with Netflix

Betternet can be a free VPN. And you get what you buy during this case.

EU Speed Test:

Betternet EU speed test
  • Ping: 64 ms
  • Download: 3.18 Mbps (97% slower)
  • Upload: 12.41 Mbps (76% slower)

That is a slow system.

Our tests revealed that Netflix is not working. Torrenting is allowed, but with download speeds of around two and three Mbps, you won’t be able to download anything.

Betternet is the slowest VPN we have reviewed.

But, incredibly, they aren’t at the bottom of the overall VPN list. Its 69th position means that there are still a couple of others with the excellence of being ranked below the slowest NPV on the market.

There are several factors that contribute to the success of a VPN (or not). However, the pace is always the Achilles’ heel.
