FrootVPN (review) was Launched by Frootynet AB in Sweden in 2014. It’s the third Swedish VPN I’ve looked at so far (others are PrivateVPN and Mullvad). It’s worth noting that Sweden may be a Nine Eyes nation.
It is one of the most affordable VPN services available on the market today.
But does that make it great? Is a minimum price really needed when your privacy is at stake?
In this review, I will discuss the pros and cons of FrootVPN. I signed up for them and used them extensively for a couple of days.
So I will expose how its performance, like speed. And it will tell you if a budget cost really has a price or not.
Also, I will be able to compare its customer support and other features with other VPN software currently on the market, revealing if it works on Netflix if it will torrent, and more.
But before I dive into all the good and bad things about FrootVPN, here is some background on the company so you know exactly who you are managing.
|OVERALL RANK:||#25 out of 78 VPNs|
|USABILITY:||Easy to Use|
|LOG FILES:||No Logging Policy|
|LOCATIONS:||35 countries, 150 servers|
|SUPPORT:||Low quality customer support|
|TORRENTING:||P2P & Torrenting Allowed|
Who is FrootVPN? Background…
My first visit to FrootVPN.com revealed a reasonably legitimate, high-quality site.
It seems that the company has really invested time and energy in aesthetics. the overall design looks modern, with a color palette of black, orange, and green.
There is also a panel in the lower right corner if you want to measure chat with a FrootVPN employee.
Later, we’ll go over the company’s customer service quality in greater detail. With this small package, I had a lot of practice.
Here’s what FrootVPN has to say about themselves on their website, as well as claiming to be the “fastest, cheapest, and safest VPN.”
Other details on the home page look promising, as does the “No Save Logs” graphic slightly below the fold.
Pirate Bay promoted this VPN in its early stages, which was quite controversial, considering all the legal problems they faced from their torrenting practices.
As you may already know, Pirate Bay was even raided by Swedish police in December 2014, forcing them to travel offline for a couple of days.
The site changed its cover logo to market FrootVPN, generating 100,000 new customers, according to TorrentFreak.
But first, let’s take a look at some of their features so you get a much better idea of what they offer.
FrootVPN Compatibility and Features
Here’s what the service claims you’ll get with any package:
While those features look great, this VPN has fewer total servers than most other competitors like PIA. FrootVPN offers 150 servers in 35 countries, including:
- United Kingdom
- United States
- South Korea
- Hong Kong
- Isle of Man
So even though you will “officially” use FrootVPN on 5 devices simultaneously, you will actually expand it with a router connection.
The company offers an installation guide for DD-WRT routers here. They are also IPv6 compliant.
Each of those devices often connects via the OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP protocols. OpenVPN is the most suitable option for many with state-of-the-art AES-256 encryption. While PPTP and L2TP are useful for older devices or connections that are less concerned with top-notch security.
FrootVPN offers a Kill Switch, like many of the major opposing VPN providers. It’s great news because you can prevent it once you least expect it.
If your network connection drops at any time, your VPN connection will be interrupted as well. Leaving it fully exposed to the general public.
Unless… you have a kill switch that immediately disconnects the link. This ensures that none of your browsing habits are shared with others.
FrootVPN Pricing and Plans
Now that you simply know what FrootVPN offers, you will get a lot of skills that are going to cost you.
But first, it’s important to note that the company has a 30-day money-back guarantee policy.
So you’ll test their service for a couple of weeks before getting locked into nothing.
Otherwise, the price of FrootVPN is pretty straightforward.
There is absolutely no difference between the three packages they provide, other than quantity and length.
You can choose from these billing plans:
Everything is one size fits all. So there’s no guessing which features accompany the different packages. It’s all included.
That keeps things nice and straightforward compared to other VPN pricing plans. There is no mystery here.
You get access to every FrootVPN server in every region, access on five devices at once, and, as a result, the same speeds on every plan.
Also, the annual pricing plan is reasonably competitive. the value here is huge – a 40% savings compared to your other plans. Most VPNs don’t cost $ 2.99 per month.
The only downside here is that the payment is a one-time payment, but it’s worth it.
If you don’t want to pay by the year but still want to embark on a worthwhile plan, I recommend starting with the three-month option that will still avoid 50%.
There are also many different payment methods available. Use your open credit, MasterCard, PayPal, Bitcoin, and excellent Money, which is almost like PayPal.
Here comes the part you were waiting for.
I’m going to reveal my experience with FrootVPN’s speed, ease of use, customer support, and more.
So let’s start with the best things first.
Strong Security & Privacy
FrootVPN uses 2048-bit encryption.
While not as stable as AES 256, it is usually a more realistic choice.
The service also offers PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), which provides “cryptographic privacy and authentication for digital communication.”
In December 2015, FrootVPN received an A + SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) rating.
Torrent and P2P traffic is also allowed through FrootVPN.
FrootVPN claims not to record any of your data, apart from your email address and username.
This is great news for your privacy because you are probably just curious about employing a VPN to protect your privacy in the first place.
The only drawback is that you must be willing to trust your VPN provider (in this case, FrootVPN) since they would be able to link your personal data (such as your email address) to your account.
FrootVPN’s monthly price of $ 4.99 is pretty good.
However, they do provide some massive discounts for quarterly and annual plans.
Saving 40% on the longest option is a great deal.
In fact, it makes them one of the most profitable plans I’ve seen for just $ 2.99 / month.
Only ZoogVPN and VPN Unlimited are slightly cheaper (for only ~ $ 0.50 / month).
FrootVPN seems to work with Netflix (at least for now)
FrootVPN claims to be listed on Netflix. So I used to be excited to determine if the claim was true.
After all, some people only use a VPN to access Netflix to titles from other countries.
When I first tried to access Netflix using a server in Vancouver, Canada, this is what I used to find:
But by using a different server than Mexico City, Netflix really worked. Here are some of the titles that popped up right away:
I was ready to check out a couple of those titles, so it looks like Netflix works on FrootVPN, on select servers, in select countries.
The usability of FrootVPN was pretty good at first. it had also been easy to install.
Once you download the software, you will be asked to log in.
Then after entering your credentials, this is what you will see on the FrootVPN platform:
This is as complicated as it sounds.
You can scroll through the list of servers to attach there, press the star to show the server to your favorites, or go to the menu to click on a server.
You can also use the receiver menu to choose which type of VPN you would like to connect to.
In general, it is not regrettable.
FrootVPN offers excellent security and prices.
Unfortunately, the rest of his offering failed to live up to the horizontal bar.
These are some of the biggest drawbacks that I saw with FrootVPN.
Very Slow Download Speed
The privacy is amazing. But you can’t completely sacrifice performance at the expense of it.
For example, I ran some US, EU, and Asian server speed tests to find out how good FrootVPN is at handling traffic.
This is what I found.
US Server (California)
- Ping: 181 ms
- Download: 19.47 Mbps
- Upload: 14.19 Mbps
These speeds will certainly be improved.
EU Server (Netherlands).
- Ping: 46 ms
- Download: 18.59 Mbps
- Upload: 40.57 Mbps
These are literally quite low speeds for the EU.
Asia Server (Singapore)
- Ping: 228 ms
- Download: 32.09 Mbps
- Upload: 9.28 Mbps
Honestly, this result was quite disappointing. Going from upload speeds of 40 Mbps for EU servers to just 9 Mbps for Asian servers can represent a big decrease.
Overall, I wasn’t impressed by these speeds. Especially once you compare them to VPN providers.
And the incontrovertible fact that FrootVPN tries to say “high speed” is one of its biggest benefits. Just take a look at this case study we did to find the fastest VPNs.
Low Customer Support Quality
The fact that FrootVPN’s customer support is mediocre is one of the most popular complaints.
This was my experience.
When you are not logged into your account, this is what happens once you click the “Need help?” button on the FrootVPN site:
You must enter an email address to continue and ask your question.
However, if you are logged in, the live chat will look a little different. You will access the “Support” area from your control panel in the lower-left corner.
Your account details can also be found on this page.
When you click on support, you are taken to an FAQ page to see if there is a solution to your question.
If not, you have a few options for speaking to customer service. the highlight is the live chat feature.
When I tried to send a message, I received a notice that all agents were busy.
You must enter your name and email along with your question.
Here’s the one I sent:
Once you click the checkmark, you should receive a notification that your message has been sent.
If you don’t want to request the live chat route, FrootVPN also offers a ticketing option:
However, you will assume that this method works equivalently to how live chat does when all agents are “busy” or offline. In other words, your message is queued somewhere to receive a reply.
After submitting an issue, I was expecting a good email from FrootVPN to let me know my question was received and to give me an estimate of how long they might consider urging me to come back to me.
I never got one. And hours later, I still hadn’t received a solution to my question.
It wasn’t until the next day that FrootVPN came with me. This is what they said:
They only guided me to FAQs. rather than, you know, responding to my query.
This seems to be in line with the internet discussion about FrootVPN. Many people have expressed dissatisfaction with long wait times.
It is difficult to call live chat “live chat” when it is not always live.
Do I recommend FrootVPN?
In general, I do not recommend FrootVPN.
This VPN is basically secure, private, and allows you to download torrents. It has excellent encryption, does not have a logging policy, and is very affordable.
You can access Netflix, which can be a great advantage.
However, there aren’t a lot of bells and whistles with FrootVPN. Download and upload speeds are very slow and customer support was pretty bad.
Disappointing user reviews seem to say that the service is safe and works. It just doesn’t offer many servers, options, speeds, or resources for technical help.
All in all, FrootVPN seems to have an excellent foundation with a lot of potentials.
But they still have some work to try in my opinion.
They are not terrible in any way. However, if you simply need a VPN service, there are much better options.
