HostMonster Hosting Review : Features, Pricing & More!

Some things get better with age. Anyway, that’s the old saying. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.(HostMonster hosting review)

HostMonster hosting review

HostMonster hosting was founded in 1996, making them one of the oldest web servers in the industry (before merging with EIG in 2015).

We purchased HostMonster’s “Basic Plan” to begin running detailed performance tests to assess your performance. We built a basic WordPress website and have monitored site stats like speed and uptime (among other important criteria) to determine where they compare to other web servers in the industry.

Does the HostMonster hosting experience give you a competitive advantage? Or has its performance declined, like so many other recently acquired EIG brands?

Let’s take a look at what we found!

Pros of HostMonster Hosting

We’ll admit it: we had high hopes for these industry veterans.

They have been around the block several times and are now owned by one of the largest industrial conglomerates. So you would think they should have their things together.

HostMonster hosting offers some decent stuff (adding some nice extra features like instant provisioning).

Here’s a short summary of the biggest positives we’ve found:

1. Good uptime (99.95%)

The industry average for uptime is around 99.93-99.94% based on our analysis.

HostMonster hosting delivered an average uptime of 99.95% with nearly five hours of downtime over the past 12 months. There were three troubled months (May, July and October 2020) but for the remainder of nine months it performed reliably.

Average uptime of the last 12 months:

  • January 2021: 100%
  • December 2020: 100%
  • November 2020: 99.95%
  • October 2020: 99.83%
  • September 2020: 99.99%
  • August 2020: 99.98%
  • July 2020: 99.85%
  • June 2020: 99.98%
  • May 2020: 99.91%
  • April 2020: 99.94%
  • March 2020: 99.98%
  • February 2020: 99.97%

2. Decent support

HostMonster hosting offers phone, email, and live chat support. We tested the latter.

Our live chat experience was pretty good. The customer support agent was online within minutes and was also quick to respond (although he didn’t seem very eager to talk to us).

3. Good security options

In order to help you protect your site and keep malicious people (or programs) at bay, HostMonster hosting offers a few different protection solutions to choose from.

Unbelievably, the primary way WordPress sites get hacked is through the hosting company’s vulnerability (up to 41 percent in one study)!

“insecure themes” and “vulnerable plugins” are closely followed, which is the natural consequence of so many different third-party instruments attempting to work together in an environment that is rapidly changing.

HostMonster hosting does a decent job, including numerous security features such as Hotlink Protection, SSH Access, support for SSL, frequent site backups, and Protection for Spam Assassin.

4. Instant provisioning and quick setup

They pledge immediate provisioning of their servers if you plan to go for their dedicated or VPS hosting.

That’s good news for people who want to get started quickly (or those outside the US overseas) because you’re not going to have to go through a long, drawn-out verification call or anything like that. Instead, in seconds, you can expect your servers to be up and running.

They will also include, like many other web hosting services, a free domain name with all new plans for one year. Huh! Yippee!

5. Fairly good value (50GB storage, unmetered bandwidth, free SSL)

HostMonster’s basic plan isn’t the cheapest at $ 4.95 / mo, but you do get pretty good value considering some of the restrictions and extras.

To start with, right out of the box, you get up to 50 GB of storage and unmetered bandwidth. You can also get a free SSL certificate, in addition.

Considering that GoDaddy tries to sell you another $ 100 a year just for this feature and realizes that the asking price is a pretty decent value.

Cons of HostMonster Hosting

So far our support experience has been good. But we have found several mixed reviews from others.

We appreciate the extra attention to detail about security issues, which helps us ensure that your clients’ sites are safe and secure.

But this is where things get interesting.

Let’s see what negatives you need to consider before choosing your next web host.

1. Slow page load time for the last 12 months

HostMonster hosting delivered an average page speed of 1190ms for the last 12 months and its speed has worsened this year.

HostMonster Speed Feb 2020 - Jan 2021
HostMonster average speed See stats

That’s critical, considering that just one touch, a small delay of a second causes success across the board:

  • 7% decrease in conversions
  • 11% decrease in page views
  • 16% decrease in customer satisfaction.

If you are specifically trying to find fast web hosting, you may want to go for A2 Hosting or InMotion.

2. Misleading pricing with a lengthy commitment required

HostMonster does not offer a real “month-to-month” plan, with the minimum requirement starting at 12 months.

What’s even worse, the value is more expensive for this feature as well.

For example, if you only want the cheapest “promotional” rate shown on the location, you will have to plan for three years (paid in advance).

That’s a huge commitment to form once you literally have no idea if you are still liking them.

Unfortunately, this system is also standard practice in the hosting arena.

3. Hidden costs and fees

Unfortunately, there are also a couple of hidden costs down the road that may surprise you.

First of all, your “Low” promotional rate is only available for new and spectacular plans. When your plan is renewed, the value will return to the normal (inflated) rate.

Your “free domain name” is not free. If you choose to cancel your account, you will be charged a non-refundable fee.

4. Charge for backups

Speaking of additional fees, there is also a $ 1.99 monthly charge for backups (if you want them). Many other web hosting companies we’ve reviewed so far will include this feature as a gift, so it’s just another fee on the long list that is piling up now.

5. High migration costs

Moving your existing website from one hosting company to a different one is not the biggest challenge in the world. Technically, the method is fairly straightforward if you recognize what you are doing.

But that is precisely the problem:

It’s really not worth doing all this manual work if you’re not a tech-savvy webmaster yet.

This is why many of the web servers that we have reviewed will provide you with site migrations at no additional cost. It is sensible for them as they are basically gaining a replacement customer while their competitor is losing one at the same time. So it is a simple “gift” to offer people to make them realize your goodwill.

Unfortunately, HostMonster does not accept this shot as true. Instead, they are using it as another opportunity to earn money.

They will allow you to migrate your own site for free via FTP (which stands for “File Transfer Protocol”). But, as we’ve discussed, it’s probably not worth it.

Therefore, HostMonster can roll for you, except for $ 149.99 reciprocally. They will roll in the hay for up to 5 sites and 20 email accounts. However, it’s still pretty expensive within the grand scheme of things when the hosting plan you’re buying probably won’t even cost that much.

At least not during elementary school anyway. This brings us to the next number …

6. High plan renewal costs

Web hosting websites do not inherently lie. they just stretch reality a bit.

Take the pricing page as an example. Those rock-bottom fees look pretty cool at first glance, right? A couple of dollars a month probably doesn’t even cover the coffee bill lately.

However, it is only when you peruse the FAQs or the Terms and Conditions that you simply start to peel off the layers of deception.

The first common flaw is that you can usually only get those advertised low prices if you pay upfront for a minimum of three years. However, we go from bad to worse, once you start to see how much these plans will cost when it comes time to renew them after the first few years.

HostMonster renewal pricing doubles after the first term.

HostMonster’s “cheap” monthly rates will double in the blink of an eye, going from $ 4.95 / month at the lowest point to almost $ 10 for an exact equivalent service. the larger Plus, Choice, and Plus Pro plans increase even more dramatically, costing you premium prices for a comparatively basic deal at the top of the day.

So if you’re not eager to switch hosts again for a few years, it’s probably worth spending an extra couple of bucks and getting the simplest value in the long run.

Do We Recommend HostMonster?

Not really.

HostMonster’s performance is pretty average across the board, to be honest.

Their customer support and uptime are decent.

But HostMonster failed in our speed tests and that’s a huge concern, seeing as a ‘working’ website is kinda a prerequisite here.

Then you have the issue of all-too-common pricing tricks, which isn’t quite as good as advertised when you start adding up all the extra fees and charges over time.

Simply put – there are better hosts out there for your money.
