Hoxx VPN Review in 2021: Features, Pricing & More!

Hoxx VPN (review) is more of a proxy service of sorts than a full VPN. It promises to unblock geo-restricted websites, hide your IP address, and encrypt your internet connection. It offers a free and paid version to protect your personal data when using public Wi-Fi.

Hoxx VPN is owned and operated by a corporation called VPN1 LLC. are headquartered within the U.S.

Their product has been on the market since 2014, and according to their official website, more than 1 million users have used it on their 674 servers located in 32 country locations.

Those are impressive numbers, to mention the least amount.

Hoxx promises “100% security, privacy, and protection”. The three things VPNs should aspire to.

But do they comply? That’s what we started looking for during this review.

Hoxx VPN Pros

Hoxx VPN offers promise equivalent to all other VPNs on the market:

  1. Grant your anonymity online by masking your public IP and relocating it to a server in another country.
  2. Access government or geographically blocked content during a secure environment, including entertainment streaming services and social media platforms.

But here’s the thing.

We use this VPN app to do those things.

Here’s what worked (and what didn’t).

Good Number of Servers, Unlimited Connections

Hoxx VPN allows a large number of connections. this is usually a good thing considering that internet users divide their time between mobile and desktop devices.

Particularly because most other standard VPNs only allow three concurrent connections.

Premium users even have access to all or some of the 674 servers located in 32 countries. Those numbers are great upfront because it means your chances of finding a free server on the edge of you are sweet.

But to be honest, this is often where our positive vibes end.

Soon enough, the experience turned south.

So without further ado …

Hoxx VPN Cons

We have 11 items under this Cons list.

I found this VPN to be very problematic, from its unapologetic logging policies to its demonizing of common services (like torrenting).

My hands-on test was an absolute disaster, too. So you’ve got that to look forward to.

Alright, take a deep breath and let’s dive in.

Hoxx VPN RECORDS your web activity

I give Hoxx points for honesty.

On their FAQ page, they claim that they keep logs of your internet activity to fight illegal actions.

Hoxx VPN logs your activity

While its stance against criminal activity is admirable, the goal of a VPN is not to log your activity. Doing so goes against your own purpose.

Most VPNs aren’t that forthright about this, claiming anonymity while hiding the important facts in their privacy policy.

Just for “fun”, I dove into the Hoxx VPN privacy policy to determine how deep the rabbit hole is.

Hoxx VPN collect some information automatically

They record information in your browser, your access times, pages visited, IP address, and, therefore, the page you viewed before activating their services.

What information is shared by Hoxx VPN

Furthermore, they do not guarantee that your personal information is secure while using their software.

Hoxx VPN reserves right to share

Not only are they recording your information, but they are also reserving the right thing to keep much of it. But that’s okay because they won’t share it, right?

disclosure of information

And there it is.

Hoxx claims that your information is not secure on its server. they can and can hand over anything you do or say to the government or authority if they deem it necessary.

My God. Run and hide.

The United States is the founding member of the Five Eyes Alliance.

Hoxx VPN’s parent company, VPN1 LLC, is based in the United States.

That’s cool, right? Buy American! Do ‘Murcia Gr8t again!

Not so fast…

The United States can be a member of the 5 Eyes surveillance alliance. So, in addition to the CIA and FBI keeping your personal data on file, they can also share it with Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

5 eyes country list
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

In other words, if one of these countries collects information, it will share it with the four opposites.

It was not an excellent start. Especially then the atrocious logging policy.

Obsolete VPN tunneling and encryption protocols

Hoxx VPN uses RSA 4096 bit encryption.

This is usually the most secure encryption algorithm in the world.

Like, every years and years and years and years and years and year ago.

In 2013, researchers came close to cracking it with only basic hardware.

This necessitates the impenetrable 256-bit AES standard employed by most government agencies (and other major VPNs we’ve reviewed).

Supercomputers haven’t gotten anywhere near the edge of cracking AES-256, so it holds up much better than a system that broke five years ago using just a microphone.

OpenVPN is widely considered the simplest modern VPN protocol. Instead of adopting this, Hoxx uses the HTTP tunnel for browser add-on services and the Shadowsocks protocol for its desktop and Android applications.

Also, Shadowsocks is simply a proxy, not a VPN protocol, which means that you are limited in terms of what programs can run on top of it.

Again, disappointed.

IP Leaks Detected

Every VPN we review goes through an in-depth series of six main tests for DNS and WebRTC leaks.

If your VPN server is skipped or bypassed due to an error, a DNS leak occurs. Your ISP will be able to see your IP address, making the VPN useless.

DNS traffic leak
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

DNS leaks are a huge problem, as up to 70% of Chrome extension VPNs fall victim to the current bug.

WebRTC provides real-time communication capabilities to browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox. It is a great service that is meant to assist in the PSTN applications event. However, it can cause problems for VPNs.

A WebRTC leak occurs when the presence of the API interferes with the VPN and discovers the first IP address.

Like all the other VPNs we reviewed, we put Hoxx through our six tests to determine if IP leaks were occurring. Of these six, three failed, affected by DNS and WebRTC leaks.

A 50 percent failure rate does not bode well for Hoxx VPN’s security.

A combination of outdated encryption and VPN protocols including lousy test performance leads us to classify this VPN as insecure.

The only excellent news is that we did not see any evidence of possible viruses or malware in your installation files.

Slows internet speed by 94%

Slowdowns are inevitable.

But 94% slower? That is completely avoidable.

We tested two different Hoxx servers with our own disconnected network speeds.

And the first EU test saw a performance decrease of about 70%.

EU speed test
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

EU Speed Test:

  • Ping: 39 ms
  • Download: 29.66 Mbps (69% slower than 97 Mbps benchmark)
  • Upload: 46.21 Mbps (12% slower than 53 Mbps benchmark)

Our US test fared slightly better for download speeds. But don’t upload them.

Take a look for yourself.

US speed test
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

US Speed Test:

  • Ping 197 ms
  • Download: 48.99 Mbps (49% slower than 97 Mbps benchmark)
  • Upload: 2.78 Mbps (94% slower than 53 Mbps benchmark)

These speed results put Hoxx VPN at number 50 out of 78. While it is not the slowest, it is not the fastest either.

Doesn’t work with Netflix

Netflix does not need blazing-fast internet to run.

So for a short time, VPNs were the solution to access Netflix content from anywhere in the world.

However, that didn’t last long.

Just a couple of years ago, Netflix started cracking down on VPN servers one by one. And today? Most continue to suffer from the results.

Let’s take Hoxx as an example.

We tried five different Hoxx servers and found that none of them supported Netflix.

  • Canada – Failed
  • US Chicago – Failed
  • NL – Failed
  • US NY – Failed
  • US Miami – Failed

Doesn’t allow torrenting

The use of torrents receives a lot of criticism because it is generally related to content piracy.

However, copyright infringement isn’t always your worst nightmare when torrenting.

But the opposite people with whom you are connected. P2P offers unprecedented access to download massive files at breakneck speeds. It also leaves you completely hospitable security gaps without a VPN attached.

However, despite the legitimate uses of torrenting, Hoxx VPN draws a solid line in the sand on its FAQ page.

Torrenting is not allowed on Hoxx VPN

While many VPNs limit torrent services to certain servers, Hoxx VPN doesn’t support it in the least.

If you’re trying to find a VPN specifically for torrenting, check out our list of the best VPNs for torrenting.

Limited device support

Hoxx VPN is available on both desktop and mobile platforms. According to the company’s website, the browser market is its primary target.

Hoxx compatibility

The last time I checked, Hoxx VPN supported Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Android, Mac, and Opera. Since February 2019, they’ve added support for iOS.

Good right?

What’s not so great is that it means they don’t offer support for routers, game consoles, or smart TVs.

Furthermore, they do not have a kill button.

In the event of a serious IP leak, circuit breakers are often the last line of defense for a VPN.

Hoxx VPN does not have a kill switch, leaving its users susceptible to the various leaks that we found throughout our tests.

Does not allow the use of the TOR network

Many VPNs support the TOR network.

TOR can be a browser that adds an extra layer of security to your activity. But TOR is not an ideal system and there are many loopholes that can anonymize users.

To combat this, people started employing a VPN in conjunction with TOR. This prevents anyone from knowing that you are using TOR in the first place.

Hoxx VPN, however, does not allow TOR and is again very firm about it on its FAQ page.

Hoxx VPN doesn't allow TOR
Tor is illegal… Really?

Well no, Hoxx, it’s not actually illegal.

Minus one for data verification failures.

It was even created by the great United States of A. in the first place. Therefore, it is definitely legal and widely used by activities and journalists around the world.

Extreme installation and performance problems

I tried using Hoxx VPN for Windows after downloading it to my laptop from its official site.

The download and installation went smoothly. Encouraging signs.

Then I selected a US-based server and started trying to use it.

After the spinning circle of doom spun for what felt like the 10,000th time, I canceled the login and tried again. this point used to be connected, but there was another immediate problem.

Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

I was informed that the system was spilling my IP address through a WebRTC leak. So I disconnected and reconnected. Once again, the connection timed out.

I canceled and logged in again. At this point, I connected successfully with no leak message. I visited the attempt to access YouTube and encountered another problem.

No internet connection
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

My internet connection was perfect when I logged out. But, despite the fact that it used to be linked to Hoxx, it was now completely disconnected.

When it comes to usability testing, this was an epic failure. it had been nearly impossible to urge a stable internet connection despite several different attempts.

Customer support contact form, useless

Hoxx VPN offers 24/7 customer support via email.

A help icon can be found in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. A wider feedback type appears when you click on it.

We posted an open question to verify a couple of points for this review.

The answer came six hours later, which was encouraging!

Unfortunately, his response was less:

We got the least for one question and the least for the second. We expected transparency and explanation. Instead, we get a blanket statement on the character of VPNs.

Hoxx VPN Cost, Plans & Payment Methods

Hoxx VPN cost and plans
Article: Hoxx VPN Review in 2021

Hoxx has a premium plan with several different pricing options that support the amount of time you spend on the service.

You can do a week for $ 3 or $ 40 for the entire year, which splits into $ 3.33 per month. Like most pricing structures, you save more if you sign up for extended periods of time. The two-year plan, for example, costs quite a bit $ 2 per month.

They even have a free plan. most of the differences between them come down to limits and performance.

free vs premium accounts

Free accounts have daily bandwidth limits, while premium accounts are unlimited. Also, speed is only guaranteed for premium users.

Hoxx claims on its pricing page that free users get less encryption. Free users receiving 1024 bits do not have access to the previously announced 4096-bit end-to-end encryption.

The premium account comes with a variety of additional features, such as improved 24/7 customer support, malware filtering, and guaranteed ad prevention.

They accept a large number of payment options, from PayPal to traditional master card transactions, to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin for anonymous payments. However, these options are confusing, because it seems to list multiple credit cards only once.

Do I Recommend Hoxx VPN?

Absolutely not.

This is a VPN that managed to fail almost every test we put it through.

The provider’s logging policies alone are enough to give me a break, not even mentioning all the leaks.

Logging and leaking are the 2 dreaded “L words” in the VPN world. When you are being tracked AND leaking information, what is the purpose of getting a VPN?

Its encryption and VPN protocols are out of date and can simply be cracked. The loss of speed is much higher than average.

Our hands-on test was a spectacular failure packed with long loading times, tiring logins, leaks, and crashing websites.

Its price is sweet. I suppose.

But backing up our findings, even $ 2 per month is an overpayment for a system that doesn’t offer the essential features of a VPN.
