Speed performance: NordVPN vs Windscribe
The performance of each VPN is compared taking into account the common transfer and the transfer speed of each protocol. However, it should be noted that the speed of a VPN affiliation depends on a variety of things, such as proximity to the server and reference speed. However, calculating the averages still allows us to fairly compare the speeds of Windscribe and NordVPN.
What the space unit can tell so far is that the speeds of Windscribe and NordVPN are almost similar to each other. each works quite well with certain protocols, and equally worse with others. Let’s take a deeper look at each case.
The NordLynx and Wireguard protocols are almost constant. However, NordVPN’s signature NordLynx contains a few tweaks here and there that make it slightly faster than WireGuard. Also, with Windscribe, WireGuard is only available for golems, which can be a bit of a pain.
With the NordLynx protocol, we used to be up and running at 63 prime speed and 43 prime transfer speed. As for Windscribe’s WireGuard on the golem, it doesn’t lag behind NordVPN that much, so that may come as a welcome surprise. In addition, there has been news that Windscribe wants to implement WireGuard as its main protocol.
- The baseline for all speed tests: 300 Mbps download/300 Mbps upload
|Download average||190 Mbps||189 Mbps|
|Upload average||131 Mbps||118 Mbps|
Now looking at OpenVPN, both NordVPN and Windscribe use both UDP and TCP protocols. Windscribe has also implemented two of its variations, WStunnel and Stealth. Let’s see how they stack up against NordVPN.
Looking at the UDP transfer speeds, it’s clear that NordVPN is the winner here, retaining sixty-fifth of the first speed. Meanwhile, Windscribe presents us with a whopping drop of seventy-two. The tables, however, change drastically within the realm of transfer averages. Windscribe could now be on fire, while NordVPN is barely catching up.
|Download average||197 Mbps||83 Mbps|
|Upload average||69 Mbps||103 Mbps|
OpenVPN TCP protocols offer a unique story. From Windscribe’s and NordVPN’s average throughput and transfer speeds, it’s clear that TCP is generally not blazing fast. However, NordVPN takes the cake here, with averages that are double those of Windscribe.
|Download average||32 Mbps||15 Mbps|
|Upload average||26 Mbps||13 Mbps|
As mentioned above, Windscribe also has Websocket stealth and stealth protocols, but since NordVPN doesn’t, it makes no sense in comparison. If you want to learn more about Windscribe signing protocols, check out our Windscribe review.
As for the last but not least protocol, IKEv2 seems to work just as well as NordVPN and Windscribe. Within the field of transfer speeds, NordVPN scores slightly higher than Windscribe, and Windscribe is faster with its transfer speeds.
|Download average||215 Mbps||155 Mbps|
|Upload average||51 Mbps||153 Mbps|
With all speeds in mind, NordVPN takes the stage during this race. It shows minor drops in original speed with almost all protocols, while Windscribe is slightly faster in the corner of movement. The worst performance from each VPN provider stems from the OpenVPN protocols, so it’s often less about the VPNs themselves and a lot about the OpenVPN sector of the Speed Circuit.
Netflix and Streaming Performance
We’re happy to announce that both NordVPN and Windscribe work great when it comes to unblocking Netflix and other streaming platforms. However, there are some small details like server convenience and membership stability, and NordVPN works with Netflix and other top streaming platforms in this case.
First of all, Windscribe has dedicated streaming servers called Windflix, located in the US, Canada, UK, and Japan. Meanwhile, NordVPN contains a feature called SmartPlay, which is specifically designed with streaming in mind.
Both NordVPN and Windscribe were able to unblock Netflix, DAZN, BBC iPlayer, and Youtube without issue. The streams loaded dead and there was no buffering.
However, NordVPN does have an advantage over Windscribe in the realm of streaming, and it is the superior range of locations you should not switch servers when you need to access different streaming platforms.
With Windflix, you will only be able to stream in the four countries mentioned above. Windscribe’s regular servers work too, but they’re not always secure. it usually takes several reconnections to search for the one server that unblocks your favorite streaming service.
On the other hand, every NordVPN server unblocks all of the streaming services mentioned, no matter where you are in the world, and the problems come up infrequently and add up pretty quickly.
It’s a tough decision to come up with, but NordVPN deserves the streaming royalty crown on this one. However, that doesn’t mean Windscribe is much worse – NordVPN is just slightly better.
Most Windscribe servers support P2P affiliation, and for people who are not marked with “No P2P” signs, that is very convenient. However, the constant cannot be the same for the velocities. They weren’t extraordinarily consistent during the download process, AND it took ten minutes to transfer an image larger than 4GB. even if the transfer time does not depend solely on the speed of the web, this is usually quite a wait time.
As for torrenting with NordVPN, this provider has specialized P2P servers with additional filterings, such as fastest, closest, most secure, etc. And downloading content was like flying through the clouds in a supersonic jet. On top of that, if NordVPN detects P2P activities on regular servers, it automatically switches you to a specialized one to give you the highest speed and security.
When it comes to options, both NordVPN and Windscribe have something to offer. Some of these options are constants with constant names, and some of them have different names but do almost constant things.
Right off the bat, I’d say it’s pretty apparent that NordVPN takes the cake during this one. They are much more specialized servers than Windscribe, and while the online filtering options are almost identical, NordVPN shows higher ends in the exclusive options section.
Any VPN that works as a VPN is good, but one that offers options designed for specific functions is better. If you are trying to find a server area unit specializing in a specific case wherever you are.
NordVPN, if it doesn’t excel, will do very well during this specialized server quiz. Here area unit the categories of servers offered:
- P2P servers for torrents;
- Dedicated computer servers if you do not want your computer address to change each time you connect;
- Double VPN or Multihop servers to double the privacy;
- Obfuscated servers to mask the use of a VPN from all the websites you visit;
- Onion over VPN to create and disappear any trace of your digital steps. smart to explore the dark web.
Windscribe, on the other hand, should come up with something if it wants to pass this category. With only a few servers for specific functions, the only thing I’ll say about Windscribe’s performance is that it’s not plentiful, but it’s honest work:
- Windflix servers for streaming;
- For the most privacy, use double-hop or multi-hop servers.
Web filtering means that it protects you from cyber threats by blocking ads and malicious websites. This successively reduces the possibility of infecting your device with malware. The existence of malicious ads and websites requires you to always be careful once you browse, however, always being vigilant takes a toll on your nerves (and your toes). so if a VPN takes this load off your shoulders (your toes) and you are continually on the lookout for any potential threats, thumbs up for that.
For example, NordVPN’s CyberSec feature filters unsafe websites and blocks ads, plus notifies you when a threat is present and prevents you from visiting the same websites. It perpetually blacklists the pages you visit and offers period protection. There is also the dark web watch feature that checks leaked databases and thus the dark web for your data and notifies you if your email or passwords were compromised.
Windscribe also has something like CyberSec. It is known as R.O.B.E.R.T. and blocks ads and trackers, domains and IPs that are not trustworthy. Paid subscribers also get protection from malicious websites and have the option to block or whitelist any questionable websites they (don’t) want to go to.
In addition to the aforementioned specialized servers and network filtering options, both NordVPN and Windscribe have something else to offer, something that is unique to each of those providers.
NordVPN’s secret gem area unit, its SmartPlay feature, and Presets. the sensible play combines the best features of a VPN and Smart DNS, allowing you to seamlessly stream content without any work on your end. It is mechanically applied and activated on all NordVPN subscriptions.
And the presets are some things that allow you to customize NordVPN to the fullest. You’ll create your most popular type of VPN association, add shortcuts to linked apps, and filter and toggle numerous options.
Windscribe, on the other hand, has 2 exclusive options, and that are Time Warp and Location Warp. No, they do not function as time and transfer machines. Well maybe. Time Warp could be a feature for browser extensions that allows you to fake your time zone and match it to the server you’re connected to, and Location Warp is a GPS spoofer. Each of those options is great for searching for limited-time deals, bypassing, and spoofing linked apps that have trusted GPS location instead of data-science address data.
NordVPN vs Windscribe: which is more secure?
Security is the problem with any VPN. Protecting your data science address and encrypting your traffic is the main goal of this service, and if it malfunctions, then it should go straight to the archiving device.
Fortunately, Windscribe and NordVPN area units are pretty smart about this security issue. Each of them uses military-grade AES-256-CBC encryption for cryptography and therefore SHA-512 hash function for additional access processing. However, cryptography and hashing functions are not the only problems that create a secure VPN.
In terms of infrastructure, privacy, and work, NordVPN is a bit more advanced than Windscribe.
This mainly means that labor units are not additional and data cannot be recorded on them. These measures also make server breaches less likely, and therefore servers that have RAM only clean themselves up once they are rebooted.
Windscribe announced its transition to RAM-only servers on Gregorian calendar month 8, 2021, following the incident of Ukrainian authorities seizing Windscribe’s servers without notice and/or warning. An announcement was published on August 24 that all keys required for the server’s handy area unit are currently kept only in memory. They also stated that the creation of a new in-memory system that does some transient data storage is on the way.
On the other hand, NordVPN has already started offering colocated or RAM-only servers to its customers. even assuming such early action is admirable, it should be noted that such picks are set in stone only once the 2018 data center breaks.
The issue of privacy is mainly associated with the country of VPN legislation and whether or not you belong to alliances that have mutual agreements to help each other in cases associated with cybercrime, such as sharing connected intelligence.
Windscribe is located in Canada and might be a member of the five-eyed alliance. Even assuming Windscribe doesn’t record any criminal data, if you’re somehow getting yourself into trouble, the data they need about you can be shared with others. Learn more about Windscribe’s employment policy below.
NordVPN, however, is based in Panama, which is not a member of any intelligence alliance, nor does it de jure need VPN providers to track and store user knowledge. Your online activity can possibly remain invisible to anyone else.
NordVPN, in turn, logs information related to medical specialty and blocks error reports, which in no way results in a selected user.
None of the providers track your computer address or your browsing and other online activities.
Plans & Pricing
VPN area unit prices are usually fairly easy to calculate and therefore the shortest subscription plans seem to be the most valuable, with costs occurring once the duration increases. This is usually true for both NordVPN and Windscribe. However, there area unit some peculiarities in addition. Let’s take a better look.
|‘Build a plan’||–||$1.00/location/month|
|Check Pricing||Check Pricing|
The first issue to note is that Windscribe does not have a 2-year plan, but offers the user to create their plan with $1 per location per month. this might sound like a pretty trade-off if you want to only use 9 locations. After that, the 1-month Windscribe subscription for $9/month would be a much better alternative, otherwise, you can get by with the free version as well.
Compare that to NordVPN’s 1-month rate, which is $4.49/month. Windscribe certainly offers a better deal, allowing unlimited matched connections, while NordVPN only allows six. This seems to be a recurring theme throughout the valuation problem.
Windscribe’s 1-year rate is about $1.00 cheaper than NordVPN’s. However, it’s also smart to consider all that NordVPN offers – it’s significantly quite Windscribe, so the extra dollar may well be worth it.
Now, since Windscribe doesn’t have a two-year plan, we tend not to be able to compare the two VPN providers much. Still, it’s like you’re getting a fair deal with NordVPN’s 2-year subscription plan for just $2.99/mo.
In general, Windscribe can also be cheaper for short-term subscriptions, but NordVPN’s 2-year plan is less expensive overall. NordVPN also comes with a free trial, so you won’t have to commit quickly.
Servers and locations
Server and location counting is another frequently mentioned feature in the VPN world. The more servers within the additional locations a VPN provider has, the larger it is. The area unit of locations vital for streaming and server count is very important for traffic distribution.
NordVPN hands down take the cake in this class, with its nearly 5,500 servers in 59 countries. Meanwhile, Windscribe is expected to have around 480 servers in 63 countries. While the country count is higher than NordVPN’s, the small variety of servers fails to tip the dimensions.
Platforms, Interface, and Ease of use
|Supported OS||Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Linux,||Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Linux|
|Other software and devices||Android TV, Chromebook, Kindle Fire, Raspberry Pi, Amazon Firestick, Xbox, Playstation, Chromecast, Nintendo Switch, router||Router, Huawei, FireTV|
|Browser Extensions||Firefox, Chrome||Firefox, Chrome|
Both Windscribe and NordVPN are compatible with all major operating systems and offer equivalent browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome. However, NordVPN is also compatible with a wide variety of devices and alt codes, from routers to Kindle Hearth. There is no mention of a Windscribe equivalent, as it only supports three alternate codes.
However, when it comes to simultaneous connections, NordVPN only offers vi. Windscribe leaves NordVPN in the mud with its limitless variety of accessible connections.
Before thinking about it, it should be noted that the selection of a VPN-compatible UI style comes down to personal preference. The practicality of the application is wherever you are.
Windscribe’s desktop apps have a small interface compared to NordVPN. Plus, they’re still absolutely useful, and every feature is easy to find. shouldn’t be the top of the UI style, but easy navigation and funny location names (Helsinki Steam Bath or State Capital Unhealthy Kangaroo Bear and State Capital Clever Koala) can compose for the small interface.
macOS and Windows apps appear equivalent with no noticeable variations. The LINUX buyer, by contrast, has no graphical interface at all and the only embellishment is the pixelated Windscribe branding that appears on the terminal. The installation and victimization method can be a bit intuitive as it requires very few changes and configurations.
NordVPN’s desktop interface is lightweight, as big as you want, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It’s excruciatingly simple to navigate and figure out the options you want, tweak settings, and pause connections. The location option is available in two forms: there is an inventory, an associate degree, and an interactive world map with cute little pine trees to adorn.
Like Windscribe, NordVPN does not have a LINUX graphical interface, but the commands are very simple and easy to remember. The installation method for each client (Windows, Linux, and macOS) is also easy and fast.
NordVPN’s mobile apps look a lot like the desktop ones. There’s the fully featured map and side menu, though they might be a little better organized. I usually had trouble finding where some of the settings were. The mechanical shopper also incorporates a dark mode (depending on your device settings).
The only discernible distinction is truly between the options. The mechanical man version, for example, doesn’t have the favorites section, but it does have split tunneling, pause and auto-connect options, and a configurable kill switch. The latter is usually turned on in the iOS shopper, in addition to watching the dark web, which isn’t exactly a gift to the mechanical man.
The mobile apps for Windscribe are a little more practical than the desktop version. First off, the display is full-screen, and the styling is understated, but still somewhat easy on the eye. All features are measured wherever you want to find them, and the country list is accessible. The Mechanical Man app also has an advantage: from now on, the WireGuard protocol is easily available there. One downside, though, is that the phone vibrates when you scroll down the list of countries, but perhaps this is something most can drag.
Last but not least, the side to look at is customer support. Both NordVPN and Windscribe have intensive data and access centers with lots of tutorials and how-to guides. Windscribe also features a fairly active subreddit where users and support agents offer help to those in need.
Where these providers disagree, however, is on the live chat feature. NordVPN incorporates a live chat that can be accessed 24/7, and you will also be able to reach support via phone. Meanwhile, Windscribe only has a chatbot, and if it is not effective in answering your queries, sending a price tag is your only way to reach human intelligence. Also, answers are usually available within a few hours, that’s not too bad.
