Uptime is vital because your visitors expect your site to be available 24 hours a day. Uptime is generally expressed as a percentage of the total available time, such as 99.9%.

Often times, web hosting providers boast of being the fastest and promise high availability with their hosting services. To check if they live up to your expectations, we signed up for both SiteGround and iPage and created a WordPress test site on each of them. We also installed a default theme, added fictional content, and uploaded some images to reflect a live environment on our test sites.

Then we ran a couple of different speed and uptime tests on them.

These are our results:

speed test siteground

According to our Pingdom test, our SiteGround test site took just 649ms to load when tested from Dallas, Texas. That’s faster than 95% of all sites tested.

ipage pingdom speed test

When we run an equivalent test on iPage; our test site took 2.6 seconds to load.

In addition to our Pingdom test, we also used a test tool called Load Impact to find out how SiteGround and iPage would handle server requests during a surge in traffic.

For testing, Load Impact sent some virtual users (VUs) to our sites and gradually accumulated up to 100 visitors at a time.

As you will see in our SiteGround test, there have been a couple of spikes within the load time graph. this is usually quite common during a shared hosting environment. However, our site never went down during testing.
