SpyOFF VPN has a lot to love.

It operates outside of the main monitoring coalitions’ authority, employs some highly secure security methods, and even manages to unblock a few Netflix servers. When you add torrents and an easy-to-use interface, you’ve got yourself a good VPN.

Let’s dive into the great.

San Marino Jurisdiction

Surveillance alliances can undermine a VPN. There are 14 nations that combine their spy information to form three major alliances.

SpyOFF VPN is located in San Marino, which may be a small strip of land dug out of the Italian peninsula. once you hear that, you will possibly immediately assume that SpyOFF is under the jurisdiction of the 14-Eye Surveillance Alliance.

But you would be wrong.

San Marino is classified as a “microstate” with its own government.

So what does this mean?

They share the Italian language and culture, but not most of the country’s laws, including surveillance and data retention.

San Marino does not actually have laws within its system that can compel a corporation to disclose the knowledge of its clients. In fact, San Marino applies a double criminality law for requests for information from foreign courts. which means that a petition can only be admitted if the crime in question is threatened with a minimum penalty of 1 year in prison.

That keeps it fairly safe from government spying efforts, and since SpyOFF doesn’t save any log information, they would have nothing to show even in the case of an invite.

That isn’t to suggest that your policy on registration is perfect. That will be discussed more in the disadvantages section.

Secure Protocols and Encryption

SpyOFF uses a variety of various protocols, including OpenVPN, the undisputed master of the protocol suite.

Article: SpyOFF VPN Review In 2021

Besides OpenVPN, they also offer PPTP and L2TP / IPsec protocols. Both OpenVPN and L2TP / IPsec run using state-of-the-art AES-256 bit encryption, which is the best of all encryption standards.

This is the scope of encryption employed by government agencies such as the FBI and the NSA. If you can disable Russian hackers, you can protect your torrents with ease.

SpyOFF divides its protocols into three categories.

  1. Ultra Secure – This is often the most advanced and secure route. Use OpenVPN and AES-256 to stay as secure as possible.
  2. Balanced – Uses L2TP / IPSec paired with AES-256. It is faster than OpenVPN, as more security means less performance. However, you are still using AES-256, so if you are relatively secure within the network you are using, this could be an efficient and secure option.
  3. High Speed - This feature sacrifices safety for speed. It is by far the fastest, but it is using PPTP protocols and AES-128 Bit encryption. Not only is the encryption weaker, but PPTP is very outdated and can be hacked in less than three minutes.

You’re not locked into one after making your choice, so feel happy to maneuver between them at will. If you’re at the front desk, you’ll try one of the lower security modes. If you are connected to a high-security risk option like public-wifi, confirm to use OpenVPN.

Torrenting is Allowed

When you torrent, you connect to other users’ computers to download large files piece by piece. It should be a relatively simple and secure system, but cybercriminals have started using it to gain remote access to your computer.

By connecting to a VPN, you can protect yourself from cyber-attacks. Except for a few VPNs, which operate flawlessly with torrents.

Where does SpyOFF fall?

Somewhere in the middle

They restrict VPN access to a few servers. We tested its torrenting capabilities in May 2018.

We tried to download the famous “I have a dream” speech by Luther King, Jr. in audio format. The download started and went quickly with no problems.

Worked with Netflix

Before 2016, VPNs were a godsend when it came to accessing geo-blocked Netflix content from anywhere on the planet.

Someone in France would connect to their VPN, select a server within the US, and boom, they were watching unrestricted content.

Well, Netflix caught that game.

One dark day in 2016, VPN users logged in and came face to face with a black screen of doom.

Netflix had unleashed one of the most advanced VPN blocking systems in the world to prevent VPN users from noticing. Netflix’s VPN ban had started.

Still, a variety of VPNs have managed to bypass Netflix’s blocking efforts. It depends not only on the VPN you are using but also on the server you are trying to access.

We tested four of the SpyOFF servers and were pleased to find that one of the four completely unblocked the Netflix service. The server in question was based in the US We also tested servers in the UK, Canada, and therefore the Netherlands, but they all failed.

This puts SpyOFF within the company of some big hitters who have also managed to push through the Netflix ban, such as ExpressVPN.

User-Friendly Application

A VPN client doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sure, it does a tricky job, but it should be very easy to download, install, and use, a non-computer-savvy granny should have no trouble turning it on.

That isn’t always the case. Some VPNs are extremely difficult to use or frequently crash.

SpyOFF, however, keeps things simple.

The installation is done in the user panel, after logging in together with your username and password through its official site. Choose where you want to download the file and you’re done.

I was impressed with how quickly the device downloaded to my laptop, which was running Windows 10. It had been so fast that I didn’t even get a chance to take a screenshot.

Once downloaded, the device was opened. Before I was taken to the registration screen, I went through a couple of SpyOFF features.

After that, I used to be ready to log in with my username and password.

That led me to the main SpyOFF screen, where I was able to easily select my server and connect. It will also use its Smart Connect service to automatically connect to the fastest server they need.

Once I selected my server (in Canada, huh?), The service went online in seconds.

Once you used to log in, you used to be ready to navigate with relative ease. There was little to no delay and changing locations was simple. SpyOFF does not put limits on your ability to vary servers, so it is just one click and you go to another corner of the planet.

Built-In Killswitch

It’s always good to know about a service that uses a built-in kill switch.

A killswitch detects the presence of a DNS leak, which could potentially expose your original IP. Once that happens, the switch is activated and therefore the system automatically shuts down.

spyoff kill switch explanation page

No VPN should have DNS leaks, but they are happening. And if or when they happen, you will never know. The only thank you to being 100% protected is owning a kill switch, and SpyOFF has given you that extra protection.

Decent Server Park

You want to be sure that the VPN you are using features a large selection of servers from which to establish itself.

The first time we reviewed SpyOFF we were not impressed with their selection. At that time, they offered only 395 servers. While that sounds like tons, it’s nothing compared to the several thousand that services like NordVPN offers. What’s more, the servers they had were opened in 25 countries, most of which are in North America and Europe.

Since then, they’ve made significant progress.

SpyOFF currently has over 1,000 servers spread across 40 locations across six continents. (Unfortunately, Antarctica does not have Netflix.)

This is a significant improvement, and we congratulate SpyOFF on a fantastic release.

Well done!

We have an application that is easy to use during a secure jurisdiction, with a large server park, a security switch, and excellent security protocols.

What could go wrong?

Some things, actually.

Take a deep breath and let’s analyze the bad.

Questionable Logging Policy

SpyOFF does not log your data, so what does this do within the scam section?

They are lying?

No, we discovered that your registration policy is really improving. To be sure, I read their excessively long and dull privacy policy. (I do everything for you!)

Privacy policy

So where does the scam come in?

It seems that SpyOFF is not the absolute owner of its servers. They believe that third parties rent the access and resell it to them.

This is not uncommon in the world of VPNs. In fact, we have found that many VPN companies play this deceptive game.

So you really have no idea who has access to your data once you connect to these servers. SpyOFF is not registering you, that’s for sure. But who can mention that those other services don’t save your information?

We can accept some gray areas, but this is often a touch too gray.

Slow Speeds

We ran SpyOFF through two-speed tests and decided to challenge them at their finest, using the “High Speed” option.

According to SpyOFF, this could produce your fastest results.

Or so we think.

When the dust settled, SpyOFF could not rank above 54 out of 78 VPN in terms of speed. It is not an excellent presentation in the least. It’s definitely not enough to make our list of the fastest VPNs.

We start with a baseline speed of 98 Mbps download and 53 Mbps upload.

We connect to SpyOFF servers in both the Netherlands and the United States and record the results.

This is how the Netherlands did:

spyoff netherlands speed test
Article: SpyOFF VPN Review In 2021

Netherlands Server Results:

  • Ping: 53 ms
  • Download: 49 Mbps
  • Upload: 37 Mbps

At its fastest, it is undermining 50% of our baseline speed.

Things got worse once we tested their US server.

spyoff us speed test
Article: SpyOFF VPN Review In 2021

U.S. Server Results:

  • Ping: 113 ms
  • Download: 17 Mbps
  • Upload 13.15 Mbps

This was quite a 70% slowdown.

Remember, this was your “high speed” option with limited protection, so what should happen when you harden security and use OpenVPN?

Low Device Compatibility

SpyOFF is compatible with Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, and Linux platforms. That is pretty inclusive, but not enough.

There is some support for routers, but not for unspecified routers. you have to open your wallet and hand over tons of money to get you.

That’s the only way we can express our gratitude for ensuring the safety of your smart home technology. SpyOFF apps aren’t available for TVs, gaming consoles, and other internet-connected gadgets, and getting one is difficult due to network security concerns.

If SpyOFF supports common routers, we will probably give them our approval. But something about forcing users to get their expensive hardware just bothers us the wrong way.

DNS Leaks

DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks betray the goal of a VPN.

When a leak happens, you are bleeding your original IP address out of the VPN tunnel, exposing it to your ISP’s eyes.

When we initially tested SpyOFF, it received a certificate of good health. We retested them for this review and therefore the results were not good.

Of the four leak tests we ran, SpyOFF failed two of them. We also found potentially malicious software attached to its installation file.

This is how it was reduced:

  • IPLeak.net: FAILED
  • Browserleaks.com: PASSED
  • Perfect Privacy: FAILED
  • Chrome Extension Leak: PASSED
  • Virustotal Scan: FAILED

Fortunately, there is a Killswitch option available, but the presence of the computer virus, especially, is cause for serious concern.

Unresponsive Customer Service

There is no live chat. That’s not surprising, as only top-tier VPNs have this.

However, SpyOFF submits a contact form through their support page.

I completed the form and asked a fairly simple question.

It’s been quite 15 hours since I posted this question and I still have not received a response, nor have I received any fully automated messages stating that it has been received.

Swing and miss.

SpyOFF Cost, Plans, and Payment Options

All three SpyOFF paid plans are identical in terms of features. The difference lies in your commitment period.

spyoff vpn pricing plans
Article: SpyOFF VPN Review In 2021

The three options are:

  1. Monthly: $ 12.99 per month. the most expensive of the three, but has the maximum flexibility.
  2. Six Months – Billed as $ 65.94 every six months. It drops to $ 10.99 per month, which is still pretty high compared to several of the opposing VPNs we’ve reviewed.
  3. Sixteen Months – Billed as $ 89.60 every 16 months. this feature comes down to just $ 5.60 per month. While this is often the most affordable option, it does require an extended commitment.

All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

They accept a variety of payment options, including SEPA direct debit, MasterCard, PayPal, and BitPay.

Do I Recommend SpyOFF VPN?

In short, no.

It started out promising. Your jurisdiction is great and therefore the app is easy to use. I really like that it includes a kill switch, and its server park is growing at a mighty rate.

But their high-speed option was ridiculously slow and therefore the presence of IP leaks undermines the entire product. not to mention the malware we found stuck to some kind of barnacle in its installation file.

Their no-logging policy looked great at first, but as you know they don’t control the servers, it loses part of its shine. The poor and indifferent customer assistance was the final nail in the VPN’s coffin.

It’s also rather costly. We propose considerably higher-quality VPNs that are in the same price range or less.
