WestHost Review 2022: Features, Pricing & More!

WestHost review, reliable host but with some drawbacks.

WestHost was backed in 1998 by Chis Russell, they joined the UK2 cluster in 2008. WestHost is one of the oldest internet hosts out there. It is also worth mentioning that the UK2 cluster owns MidPhase hosting.

Pros of Using WestHost

WestHost has quite a few perks to them.

Let’s take a better look.

1. A free name

You spotted it right. If you stay with WestHost, you’ll get a free name for the first year.

However, this benefit only comes with the most popular and enterprise-level plans. For the most cost-effective shared setup, you would have to pay an additional fee depending on the domain. As an example, the .com domain would cost you $0.99 for the first year and then renew at $14.99/year.

2. Solid time period 99.93%

Over the last twelve months, WestHost had a median time of 99.93% with more than six hours of time.

In general, WestHost has shown good results for most of the year. there were only 2 bad months (February and Gregorian calendar month of 2021) when the period was 99.68% and 99.59% separately.

For the previous 12 months, the average uptime was:

  • December 2021: 99.59%
  • November 2021: 100%
  • October 2021: 99.96%
  • September 2021: 99.97%
  • August 2021: 99.98%
  • July 2021: 99.95%
  • June 2021: 99.98%
  • May 2021: 100%
  • April 2021: 100%
  • March 2021: 99.99%
  • February 2021: 99.68%
  • January 2021: 99.99%

3. Smart page load time

Fast page speed is definitely something to look for when selecting a number.

We have set a speed benchmark of 850ms – anything above this mark is unsatisfactory and anything below is approved by the United States of America.

Our test found that WestHost’s average page load time was 712ms over the last 12 months, which isn’t the best we’ve seen, but still good enough to earn a spot in our pros section.

Also, the good news is that WestHost has had stable load times throughout the year, and no bigger ones will increase speeds.

4. 30 days money-back guarantee

WestHost offers a full refund backed by their 30-day money-back policy. If for any reason you choose that your service is not for you within thirty days of registration, you will be refunded in full.

However, this only applies to their shared hosting plans.

5. Instant Activation

Unlike most Internet hosts, you don’t have to be up for hours or days for your account to be activated. With WestHost, your account is instantly activated.

6. Increased security with nightly backups

With regular nightly backups for many of their internet hosting plans, Cloudflare CDN support, and automatic malware removal for their plans, WestHost appears to be a really secure host.

7. Responsive Customer Support

WestHost offers ticketing support, a knowledge domain, and 24/7 live chat. we tend to try the latter.

We asked a direct question about their shared hosting plans and got in touch with the customer representative within minutes.

The customer service representative was helpful and skillful and responded quickly to our queries.

Cons of Using WestHost

Unfortunately, WestHost also had some drawbacks.

Let’s see them in depth.

1. Not “truly” unlimited

While some WestHost shared hosting plans promise unlimited files, bandwidth, and databases, you need to be aware that their fine print says otherwise. This is what we usually find on their Terms and Conditions page:

  • Their unlimited shared hosting is meant to meet the requirements of most small businesses and private websites; it is not designed to meet the requirements of large businesses or consumer services that fall outside of the typical usage pattern for shared hosting and will be better suited to hosting plans that provide extensive options.
  • Accounts with a huge variety of files (inode counts in excess of two hundred thousand), prodigious databases of five GB, or a cumulative size of all databases of more than ten GB will have a huge impact on server performance.
  • They reserve the right to request that the number of inodes (files and directories) and/or data sizes be reduced to help ensure server performance. Failure to comply with these requests could result in the termination of your account.

Essentially, even assuming they secure unlimited hosting, your account should generally not have databases that exceed ten cumulative GB. If they have too many files and their databases are too large, they will ask you to downscale your files or upgrade to an enhanced configuration. If you do not attempt to do this, your account may be terminated.

We’re not happy that they hid what their extremely “unlimited” hosting allows on their Terms and Conditions page.

With that being said, we tend to believe that there is no such thing as “unlimited hosting” that WestHost is generous enough for the costs it offers.

2. Introduction qualification amount too short

Every Internet host can lure you in with an associate’s degree for an incredibly low starting value. It usually seems too smart to be true because it is: when your initial term, the value jumps to twice the traditional levels (often 2 or 3 times the initial rate).

The consolation is that most hosts can let you keep this low rate for up to 3 years. therefore, you are saving a lot of cash on top of that number of points.

The problem with WestHost is that while they have a very reasonable rate upfront ($1.00/month), you can only buy it for the first month. After that, the value jumps to $5/month.

3. No website migrations offered

Last but not least, WestHost does not provide website migrations from completion (neither free nor paid migrations are included).

What will that mean to you?

If you already have an existing associate degree website and you want to transfer it to WestHost, then you will have to be forced to have sex manually. Of course, if you’re tech-savvy and website migrations aren’t your first roundup, then it’s probably not too difficult for you. However, if you are a novice in the world of hosting, it would be difficult and long.

On a positive note, WestHost’s support team is available to facilitate this matter.

Do We Recommend WestHost?

Yes and no.

Overall, WestHost is not an unpleasant hosting company.

However, they need an average timeframe, average page load speeds, and on top of that, average support.

If you prefer their low-cost initial qualification, you should offer them a try. Otherwise, keep trying to find better options.
