Best VPNs for Torrenting Anonymously in (2024) – Ranked!

Best VPNs for Torrenting Anonymously, as long as it’s not a virtual personal network is asking for trouble, but there are tons of confusing information out there about the best VPNs for torrenting.

Many so-called ‘torrent VPNs’ leak the terrible information they claim to protect; some don’t enable torrenting or P2P, and others are still slow, so you’ll have to manage.

P2P sharing presents risks of unknown files from anonymous sources, so it is wise to use a VPN for an extra layer of security.

Torrent users use virtual private networks to stay safe and personal online, but not all VPNs are suitable for BitTorrent. Dozens of leading torrenting VPNs are best avoided. We tend to find multiple problems with VPNs that we tend to evaluate:

  • Many VPNs are too slow for torrent users and can lead to slow torrent downloads.
  • Some do not offer additional leak protection to ensure that specific information is not exposed to copyright trolls and other third parties. this implies that your real scientific direction can be revealed to prying eyes.
  • Many VPNs keep logs of user activity despite misleading promotional claims to the contrary. this implies information that will be copied to specific users on the network (we have evaluated the working policies of 123 different VPNs as part of our research).
  • Some standard VPNs have policies that do not allow torrenting.

TIP: If you’re trying to find a free VPN for torrenting, we tend to justify here why we tend to discourage this and why free VPNs are almost always a poor alternative to torrenting.

We will cover ten suggested VPNs {in detail|intimately|well|very prone to toll|completely} but here is a summary of what we found.

When it comes to the sheer variety of servers to install from, it’s powerful enough to beat IPVanish. One of the world’s leading standard VPNs, IPVanish takes privacy seriously and has been designed with torrenting in mind. Hotspot Shield - Miller Reviews

Hotspot protection has faced criticism from Janus in the past for its work policy but has made a long comeback. It currently only logs encrypted scientific field addresses during a VPN session but deletes them afterward, so third parties will never read them. This provider offers wonderful security features, including strong encryption, leak protection, a desktop kill switch, and automatic LAN protection (on mobile apps). The only problem with this provider is its superior speed, which makes it a good choice for downloading huge files.

Hotspot Protect uses shared scientific discipline addresses and does not impose any data measurement limits. It will unblock many popular streaming services, including Hulu and Amazon Prime Video. With a generous 45-day money-back guarantee, you’ll always be able to check the dubbed service to see if it’s an honest match.

We put VPNs through a variety of tests and reviews as part of our review. To find the best VPN for torrenting, we would like to determine the criteria to evaluate them. Torrent users and P2P file sharers need more web privacy, no data caps, and fast transfer speeds, specifically elsewhere. With that in mind, we aim to use the following criteria to evaluate each VPN.

Methodology for Assessing VPNs for Torrenting

We put VPNs through a variety of tests and reviews as part of our review. To find the best VPN for torrenting, we would like to determine the criteria to evaluate them. Torrent users and P2P file sharers need more web privacy, no data caps, and fast transfer speeds, specifically elsewhere. With that in mind, we aim to use the following criteria to evaluate each VPN.

  • Security: Secret writing ensures that third parties cannot snoop on the VPN user’s activity or the torrents they transfer. Above all, the secret script helps keep web service providers out of your hands. A VPN kill switch and DNS leak protection are a must to ensure that no distinctive information leaves your desktop or mobile device.
  • Logging Policy – A P2P VPN service should be non-logging, which means that it does not record or save any data about your activity. IP addresses are also not logged. Ideally, the provider does not collect data and therefore cannot be hacked or forced to give up customer data. look for more here on the working policy of each VPN.

More

  • Bandwidth cap – Some VPNs have data caps or data metering limits that throttle or stop downloads up to a precise limit. we would like to avoid them, as torrents often need a lot of information.
  • Speed – The torrent VPNs we tend to recommend score higher than average in our speed tests.
  • Shared IPs – We tend to like VPNs that use shared IP addresses for torrenting. this implies that you share the IP address of the associated degree with dozens, maybe even many people. Shared IP addresses add a significant layer of obscurity, making it more difficult to trace activity back to you.

these VPN torrent tests are part of a larger program of VPN tests and review that our team conducts as part of our review method.

How Does a VPN Hide Your Ip Address

One of the main reasons a VPN is used for torrenting is to cover up a user’s IP address and maintain their online habits. However, here is a VPN that hides your IP address.

Kodi and Popcorn Time

Popcorn Time video streaming relies on torrents as a supply. While you may not download the files you found on ThePirateBay to your drive, make no mistake in stating that victimization by these tools does not make you any less liable in the eyes of the law. once you use Popcorn Time, at the same time transfer and transfer content.

Certain Kodi addons also provide torrent video streams. Hold a specific watch call for a more modern platform called Acestreams. Ace streams use point-to-point BitTorrent connections, so synchronous users will share the load of a stream. meaning your membership is shared with others, leading to potential online security and privacy issues that can usually be avoided with a torrent VPN. Ace streams are becoming more and more fashionable for live and on-demand content.

How Torrenting Works Behind a Nat Firewall

Many VPN services partner with comprehensive NAT firewalls, which block peer connections on P2P networks, as well as alternative uninvited connections. this can prevent torrents, which rely on P2P networks, from working properly.

Depending on the VPN software system, you will be ready to disable the NAT firewall somewhere within the configuration. If not, you will have to use port forwarding. this is usually a manual procedure as long as the VPN provider designates a particular port to use for P2P traffic. Users must pair their BitTorrent buyers to use this port. If the port is not listed on the VPN provider’s website, the user can contact customer support and provoke it.

The Importance of Kill Switches

A VPN kill switch stops all web traffic if the VPN unexpectedly drops the membership for any reason. This prevents your real IP address and torrent traffic from leaking onto your ISP’s unencrypted network, which could otherwise expose your activity to your ISP, copyright trolls, and hackers. this is often why binding your IP (see below) and/or using a kill switch is imperative.

We recommend that all the simpler VPNs for torrenting have a kill feature on their desktop versions, but it cannot be enabled by default. make sure to modify it within the settings. Bot and iOS mobile VPN apps are less likely to include kill switches.

Know that not all kill switches are created equal. A simple dropped connection is fairly easy to plan for, but the kill switch might not be equipped to handle other types of network disruptions, crashes, and configuration changes. You can read more about leaks that occur in these scenarios in our VPN leak testing analysis, which we will extend to more VPNs as time goes on. The two types of leaks most pertinent to torrents are IP addresses and IP traffic leaks.

Is It Necessary to Bind Your Ip Before Downloading Torrents?

P2P VPN server. If the association to the VPN drops; otherwise, you get disconnected, downloads stop, adding a kill switch to your VPN without moving different apps and services. This prevents torrent traffic from leaking to your real IP address.

Check your torrent manager code settings to see if it supports IP binding. uTorrent has this capability on Windows, and Azureus Vuze will love it on Windows as well.

How to Avoid Malware in Torrents

Torrent websites and torrents themselves are single havens for malware. As a result of the community-uploaded torrent area drive, they are usually unrestricted from viruses and malware. A case in early 2018 saw 400,000 users affected by a natural malware event caused by a Russian torrent user. when you transfer a torrent, it’s a smart|honest|decent} plan to scan it with a good up-to-date antivirus code. If the website you downloaded from includes a comments section, other users may already need to report potential threats. this is often very true for code and video games that contain multiple files, making it easier to hide malicious files.

Do I Need to Use Port Forwarding to Download Torrents?

Port forwarding can be a controversial topic among torrent users. Some say it improves your transfer speeds by allowing your torrent user to connect to many peers.

Others argue that it is unnecessary, and once a VPN torrent service is used, it only serves to make torrenting more difficult and can even degrade user privacy. this is often because different users sharing a similar VPN IP address may be restricted to similar ports other than the one the World Health Organization chooses to forward. that can make P2P activity easier to trace back to a user.

Most industrial VPN buyers don’t support port forwarding and work fine while they don’t. For those who do, enter the forwarded port in your torrent client’s settings. Port forwarding in a VPN does not require port forwarding on your router. You will have to disable NAT-PMP and/or uPNP mapping within the torrent consumer.

Best Vpn for Torrenting

Torrenting has become a stand-in for copyright abuse and piracy, however, the underlying technology itself is not misappropriated. Legal file sharing and torrent sites exist and the area unit is used daily, such as SXSW and media that are below the general public domain.

However, if you frequent ThePirateBay, uTorrent, RARBG, Putlocker, Zooqle, 1337X, or KickassTorrents, chances are that what you transfer from these torrent sites is not legal. Government authorities will fine you for committing a civil offense, while ISPs and copyright holders can threaten and, in some cases, take action. While it is unlikely that a company would be able to take someone to court, it could seek damages through settlements.

Here is a quick breakdown of torrent laws in many countries:

United States

Downloading proprietary material is illegal within the United States. ISPs typically have a three strikes rule if they detect users illegally transferring torrents. Non-copyrighted material is completely legal to transfer.

According to the Recording Trade Association of America (RIAA) website, the creation of unauthorized copies of musical recordings may result in civil court proceedings. It would even land you in jail for up to 5 years and you will be fined up to $250,000.

Copyright holders often act through copyright trolls, who record the scientific addresses of torrent users and send settlement letters requesting compensation. These entities have the right to sue on behalf of the copyright owner, but because the Associate Degree Science Directorate does not de jure represent the identity of the Associate Degree in the US, the recipients’ best chance is to ignore them.

Canada

The Copyright Modernization Act passed in January 2014 requires ISPs to send notices to copyright infringers on their networks. Recipient identities are kept on ISP servers for 6 months. Copyright holders cannot sue for damages of up to $5,000 once the copy is used for non-commercial functions, which in most cases is simply not worth the time or effort.

The notification system is more educational than legal, but ISPs will continue to punish torrent users with data blocking measures.

United Kingdom

The largest ISPs are required by law to inform subscribers once the British phonographic industry catches them downloading torrents in a sort of stop-and-chorus order. ISPs reserve the right to throttle data metering and disconnect users. However, ISPs with fewer than 400,000 subscribers do not appear to be subject to the current law.

Copyright owners have the right to sue uploaders and downloaders for damages even if it is not for financial gain.

Popular torrent trackers like ThePirateBay are blocked by major ISPs in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, however, they will still be accessible through a VPN service.

Australia

Piracy might be a crime in Australia, however, there is very little social control. It’s not entirely unheard of for a copyright holder to successfully sue ISPs for the identities of torrent users, who will then ask them to pay them for using a tracking called speculative billing, but it’s rare.

A “three strikes” rule that ruled out ISPs informing torrent users on behalf of copyright holders was scrapped earlier this year thanks to disputes over implementation pricing.

ISPs have blocked some torrent trackers and alternative sites containing infringing content under court order, such as The Pirate Bay. In 2016, an Australian court ordered ISPs to block BitTorrent hunter sites, as well as ThePirateBay, Torrentz, TorrentHound, IsoHunt, and SolarMovie. These will still be accessed with any of the VPN providers we tend to list at the top.

At the end of 2018, Parliament approved the modification of the associate titles to the Copyright Law. This modification allows ISPs to censor proxy servers and duplicate websites (duplicates of torrent trackers that are installed once the initial site is blocked) without having to go to court for every court order. Also, Google and alternative search engines should demote or remove links to offending sites, as well as their proxy servers and mirrors.

The Netherlands

We are adding a locality regarding the Netherlands because there is a great idea that piracy of proprietary materials is legal there. As of 2014, it is not. Doing this is considered a civil offense, not a criminal one, so you may not be wanted by the police for doing so, however you may be punished.

However, the law states that fines cannot be abnormally high, so the damages to copyright holders will be capped. In early 2018, the Dutch privacy watchdog Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP) authorized Dutch Filmworks to collect scientific addresses from anyone illegally downloading content. the company will give away fines to users and has selected a rate of one hundred and fifty euros per film.

Germany

Downloading proprietary material without authorization is prohibited in Germany. social control is sometimes carried out by law firms acting on behalf of copyright holders (see: copyright trolls). The fines generally vary up to 1,000 euros.

Just like in the US, copyright trolls send threatening letters to torrent users when they identify their IP address. While we are not legal advisers in German law, the agreement of what to do if you receive a letter is also the same as in the US: if it does not identify you by name and does not return directly from the police, please ignore it and simply let the statute of limitations amount expire.

Please note that if someone pirates content on an unsecured LAN network, the owner of the LAN network is liable for the damages, even if he did not respond to the criminal act. This fine is sometimes around one hundred euros.

India

Online piracy laws are a bit confusing in the Asian nation. A host of story reports from 2016 indicate that even viewing certain sites or torrent files (not the proprietary content itself) was enough to punish netizens with significant fines and jail time. However, this is often not true; the rumor stemmed from a poorly worded warning from Indian ISPs that appeared once users tried to access blocked sites.

Piracy in the Asian nation is prohibited like anywhere else and may lead to fines or prison sentences, but the pressure of social control seems to influence the distribution, e.g. smuggling and commercialism of pirated content, rather than personal consumption.

Comparitech does not condone or encourage piracy. Please stick with legal torrents.

Are Any Free VPNs Good for Torrenting?

Using a free VPN for anonymous torrenting is mostly a no-no. Due to the huge amount of information required, several free VPN services require P2P activity. Others are not safe and many have limits of knowledge. The common saying that comes with free services is that if you don’t get the merchandise, then you are the merchandise. This is often very true because a VPN is not just a piece of a software system, it is an ongoing service that needs ongoing resources and maintenance.

The free tiers of TunnelBear, Windscribe, and Hide. They are all pretty honorable, but they do require speed or data caps that aren’t ideal for torrenting. TunnelBear and VPNGate, a community-run VPN project, expressly require P2P file sharing.

We go further to many paid VPN providers. PureVPN, VyprVPN, HideMyAss, Overplay, and Hotspot claim they didn’t cut because of their work policies. IronSocket and BolehVPN were not seen due to performance considerations.

Other so-called free VPNs for torrenting will degrade your privacy instead of improving it. Some of them keep logs of your activity, inject tracking cookies into your application program, insert ads on sites, or perhaps carry malware payloads.

Hola

Some unscrupulous free VPN providers may be scraping users’ knowledge and marketing it to third parties. One such high-profile case was Hola, a free VPN provider based primarily in Israel. Hola was captured as a measure of marketing user information and was roundly criticized for being opaque regarding how each Hola user became a node in the network instead of hosting their dedicated VPN servers.

VPNGate

VPNGate is an excellent tutorial initiative from Japan that aims to remove online censorship for people living under oppressive regimes against free speech. It uses a network of volunteer nodes around the world as relays. However, it discourages P2P file sharing activities that will take over the network and keep records for up to 3 months to help eliminate abuse and criminal irregularities.

IronSocket

IronSocket does not keep logs, however, most of their servers expressly prohibit P2P activity. Those non-P2P servers block all P2P connections. It doesn’t keep logs though, which means it’s watching your activity on some level.

How Do VPNs Protect Your Privacy When Torrenting?

A VPN protects your privacy once you download torrents in two key ways.

First of all, it prevents your ISP and anyone else on your native and ISP network from seeing that you only download torrents. Because all the files you stream and transfer via BitTorrent are encrypted after passing through your ISP’s server networks, their content cannot be known. It would take a monumental time-consuming and resource-intensive effort for an ISP to even manage to crack the place of in-place encryption for their VPN service.

Second, a VPN prevents alternative users from downloading and/or uploading files similar to yours from seeing your computer address. BitTorrent could be a P2P or peer-to-peer protocol. which means that everyone who uses a similar torrent file by the World Health Organization is connected in what is known as a “swarm”. each device connected to the swarm will see all the opposite computing addresses of all the opposite devices within the swarm. Several BitTorrent buyers even let you see a list of alternate devices you’re connected to once you’re ripping or seeding files on the network.

Without a VPN, your real computer address often dictates your approximate location and network service, provider. However, copyright trolls are ready to sniff out torrent users and send them threatening settlement letters (read about how to respond to these in our torrent safety and legal guide).

More

A VPN masks your computer address so that other devices within the swarm only see the computer address of the P2P VPN server. The best VPNs for torrenting generally use shared computer addresses, meaning that dozens or even many users designated a similar computer address. this massive group of users makes it nearly impossible to trace torrent activity back to a single person. Also, if you use one of the no-log VPNs on this list, the VPN provider will not have any user data available if requested by a third party.

Masking your computer address also protects you from hackers who may use it as a backdoor into your system, establish personal data about you, or perhaps harass you at home. Your computer address is like your home address, except for your computer. someone the World Health Organization knows will set it wherever you are.

Why Hide Your Ip Address When Torrenting?

Torrenting is often related to piracy, and piracy is theft. This is a lot, torrents expose you to files from unknown sources, so protecting your identity is sometimes fascinating. We tend to strongly suggest that you simply torrent the content that you have the right to access to avoid getting into a sticky situation. If someone is caught, in all likelihood it won’t be the police or the copyright owner, the World Health Organization is knocking on the door.

Copyright holders often measure large media companies that obtain piracy from cunning legal corporations dubbed “copyright trolls.” Copyright trolls monitor standard torrents for the distinctive computer addresses of devices that connect with the swarm to stream or transfer files. They then match those computer addresses to the web service providers that assigned them to customers. The copyright troll goes through the ISP to send a termination letter or copyright infringement notice to each torrent user. Settlement letters demand cash and threaten to take action if users don’t pay.

As you might expect, hiding your computer address is popular among BitTorrent users. All VPNs hide your true computer address from the VPN server at all times. Regrettably, not all of them do a good job. Most VPNs don’t protect you from some sorts of leaks that might reveal you’re true computer address to others. DNS leaks, IPv6 leaks, and WebRTC leaks are all examples.

More

  • DNS leaks occur once a DNS request is sent out of the encrypted VPN tunnel, exposing the IPv4 address. All the VPNs we usually defend against these types of leaks.
  • IPv6 leaks occur once IPv4 traffic goes through the tunnel, however, IPv6 traffic does not. this is usually common on Windows ten PCs. Some VPNs defend against this, however, it is suggested to easily disable IPv6 if you experience this leak.
  • WebRTC can be a rule for voice and video chat apps that run in your browser, like Skype for Chrome. Even if you have a VPN enabled, a WebRTC request will reveal your real computer address. Only a few VPNs protect against WebRTC leaks, however, you can disable WebRTC in your browser.

The best VPN apps defend against all of those leaks altogether. ExpressVPN and NordVPN are remarkably leak-proof due to a combination of kill switches and leak protection measures. despite their membership being discontinued in some way, no identifiable traffic escapes the tunnel.

Also, it is essential to choose a VPN that does not keep logs. Several VPNs claim to have no logs, but that claim generally only applies to traffic logs of your online activities. several supposedly “no-log” VPNs still log users’ computer addresses, which can be a no-no for torrent users and any other UN agencies concerned about their privacy. None of the VPNs on our list store traffic logs or computer address logs.

Do All VPNs Allow Torrenting?

This table displays which VPNs are torrent-friendly.

Most VPNs allow torrenting. After all, P2P file sharing can be a common reason to buy VPN. At a minimum, the VPN you choose should even have a kill switch and never store your computer address or keep traffic logs. The table below shows that VPNs meet those 3 criteria.

Keep in mind that even though your VPN provider allows torrenting, they may like you to use specific servers or locations once you do. Check your provider’s website or customer service to see if the servers are suitable for torrenting.

Can Using a Vpn Increase Your Torrenting Speed?

A VPN will improve your torrent download speed if your web service provider is throttling BitTorrent traffic. The VPN’s encryption prevents your ISP from seeing that you are torrenting, so it cannot discriminate against specific types of web traffic.

Otherwise, a VPN will either not affect torrent download speeds or may slow speeds, depending on the difference in data measurement between the VPN and your web connection.

What Is a P2p Vpn?

Any VPN that can disguise your torrenting activities is referred to as a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) VPN. The most successful P2P VPNs retain no logs, provide kill switches, employ robust encryption, and provide fast download rates. P2P VPNs are supported by all of the VPNs we suggest.

What Is the Best VPN for Torrenting for Beginners?

All the VPNs that we usually recommend are easy to use and will not be inconvenient for beginners. I would recommend selecting a VPN that comes with a money-back guarantee and 24/7 live chat support. Support workers will quickly help you identify any issues you may be having installing and running the VPN. If you don’t find it irresistible, redeem the warranty and find a different one.

What Is the Best VPN for Torrenting on Android?

All of the VPNs we suggest have golem apps, however, not all of them have a kill switch feature on the golem. Both ExpressVPN and NordVPN will block all web traffic when the VPN is not connected.

Which Country VPN Is Best for Torrenting?

Some VPNs can direct torrents to servers in specific countries. You will often notice torrent servers in European countries and North American countries among others.

Ultimately, though, it shouldn’t matter which country you connect to download torrents. If your VPN is secure and does not store any distinctive logs, then you should be ready to download torrents while connected to a VPN in any country.

What is a Torrent Tracker?

In a nutshell, a torrent hunter is what helps you discover and transfer torrents from peers on the BitTorrent network. BitTorrent typically stores file elements on multiple users’ machines. After you want to transfer a file, the hunter finds all the items on different users’ machines and helps you reassemble a complete file.

Many bulk trackers also function as BitTorrent search engines.

What Is the Best Server Location for Torrenting?

If your VPN provider doesn’t keep any logs, then any location should be fine. Your VPN provider cannot have any information about your identity or what you are doing while connected to the VPN.

Just to be safe, here are many different factors to consider once selecting a VPN server location for torrenting:

  • Do not connect to the same country where your VPN is installed.
  • Do not connect with the United States.
  • Do not connect to the country you are currently in.
  • Connect to a geographically close server to improve speeds.
  • Check if your VPN has P2P-optimized servers

You may run into a recommendation that tells you to attach to a European nation due to lax copyright restrictions. this can be a dangerous recommendation. Infringement remains the black market there and the Netherlands’ piracy laws are driven in line with the rest of the EU. The European nation may have been a haven for piracy a decade ago, but downloading pirated media formally became a black market in 2014. There’s nothing to be gained by connecting to the Dutch capital to download torrents in 2021.

Can Comcast Still Track My Torrent Downloading Even if I Use a Vpn?

As long as your VPN doesn’t keep logs and offers backup security, no. Comcast has no way of tracking anything you are doing over the VPN due to cryptography and the use of the VPN server as a proxy for the network.

If your VPN connection drops unexpectedly during the download, Comcast may be tracking what you’re doing. make sure your VPN contains a kill switch that is turned on within the app’s settings. A kill switch can stop your network connection if the VPN connection is discontinued for any reason, preserving your privacy until the VPN connection is restored.

What Port Is Best for Torrenting?

You will need to use a range of ports greater than ten thousand to avoid being blocked or blacklisted. various consultants suggest a port in the pass-through range of 49152 to 65535. The default port used by various torrent buyers is 6881 to 6889.

Your variety of ports doesn’t matter too much, ciao, since it’s not being used by other apps or services on your device.

Note that most VPNs do not provide port forwarding for security reasons. PrivateVPN is an exception that allows you to align port forwarding within the VPN app.
