PureVPN Review in 2021: Features, Pricing & More!

Quick Background & Features Info

PureVPN (review) is one of the oldest and largest VPN providers on the market, having been founded in 2006 by its parent company GZ Systems.

From their humble 2-server beginnings, PureVPN has rapidly expanded its operation and now boasts quite a few 2,000 servers in 180 different countries.

Its services are compatible with all major devices, including:

  • Windows
  • Android
  • Mac
  • iOS
  • Linux

If you’re particularly interested in optimizing your online protection, you’ll even configure PureVPN to work alongside your routers, smart TVs, browsers like Chrome and Firefox, and streaming services (like Roku, Amazon Fire, and Chromecast).

They recently introduced a “virtual router” feature for Windows devices, suggesting that it will enable a Windows desktop or laptop with “router” -like features to connect up to 10 different devices.

Some VPN services, like VyprVPN for example, will only limit you to 2 different simultaneous connections. So the incontrovertible fact that you will be connecting PureVPN to a real router, in addition to fixing a “virtual router”, means that you will be connecting many different devices. (Probably what you ever want or need).

They even have a “split-tunnel” feature that suggests you choose how (and where) you want to send traffic, through your VPN or Internet Service Provider, as was common. Your data is often divided as needed.

While PureVPN doesn’t offer its own TOR, it will use one on top. Combining VPN with the Tor network to offer an additional layer of privacy and security.

PureVPN has a kill-safe feature that works fail-safe. The goal is to ensure that your privacy and anonymity are never compromised, as your personal information is not disclosed.

Last but not least, PureVPN comes with a NAT Firewall plugin to protect all possible hacking loopholes.

PureVPN Pros

Supports All Major Protocols (OpenVPN, IPSec, L2TP …)

Man-in-the-middle (MiTM) attacks are one of the oldest (and most common) ways hackers gain access to your confidential information.

It’s possible that you’re not even aware that something is wrong. However, someone has managed to get in the way of your scheduled connection in some way (like a browser or a website).

They can then read your emails, see which websites you are accessing, take your session cookies to trick different websites into thinking they are you, and even obtain personal information or passwords.

Oftentimes, the same tools that help intercept these practices, such as WiFi Pineapple, are often performed by anyone, anywhere. For example, sit at your local cafe as an example. Now browsing emails or booking a flight over a latte can end up being a not-so-relaxing afternoon anyway.

This potential risk now extends to mobile devices, apps, and even your smart devices as well.

PureVPN addresses these concerns by supporting all main protocols, including OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, SSTP, and even IKEv2.c

While OpenVPN is your best bet for both security and speed benefits, you could possibly also choose the availability of L2TP / IPSec or PPTP compliant devices (in just a couple of certain cases where you are not so concerned about security vulnerabilities).

Industry Standard 256-bit Encryption

Brute force attacks are another regrettably common practice.

Hackers eventually discover your passwords and PIN numbers through a series of repetitive and quick combinations of trial and error.

They are one of the oldest tricks in the book (besides just guessing your spouse’s birthday or his child’s name). And they are actually increasing.

For example, a recent widespread attack on WordPress sites has been led by a Russian company that is being used by the country to launch cyberattacks (you cannot make these things up).

The best type of defense during this case is prevention. That comes under the 256-bit type of encryption, which is one of the most secure connections possible. it is so safe that it is used by government agencies around the world.

His encrypted tunnel is hermetically sealed so that third-party sites, ISPs, and nefarious and shadow organizations deserve to be the later Bond villain, they can’t see what he’s up to.

In addition, its privacy and anonymity are completely safe thanks to its “end-to-end” connection. This includes once you switch from one IP to a different one (or another, or another) in PureVPN’s 80,000+ options.

Some Pretty Cool Features

One of the things that I really liked about PureVPN is simply what percentage of features and options they offer to their users.

For starters, they provide a kill switch, five simultaneous connections, support for all major protocols, DDoS protection, advanced port forwarding, split tunneling, and a NAT firewall.

In fact, they provide a host of ways to optimize and personalize your VPN experience that could make even the simplest VPN blush.

Unfortunately, while these services are great in theory, they do need some functionality issues that need to be resolved.

Personally, I had a circuit breaker go out, and after reading through a variety of third-party forums and reviews, I discovered that almost every customer has had some sort of issue with some of PureVPN’s features at some point.

Unrestricted Torrenting

PureVPN is solidly in favor of torrenting.

Why is it noteworthy?

Because copyright infringement lawsuits have started to flood the market, more and more VPNs are moving away from P2P servers.

Oftentimes, those that still offer torrent-friendly servers only allow it in a few offers.

But PureVPN doesn’t have these restrictions.

You are liberal to torrent on any of your servers. So download it!

Quick Live Chat Support with OK responses

By running a VPN, your security is on the way. As such, you would like to ensure that your questions and concerns are often addressed quickly and efficiently through a responsive customer service department.

We weren’t impressed with PureVPN’s support when we first checked them. While it did have live chat, all of the answers seemed to be created automatically. PureVPN, on the other hand, took criticism well and responded with a quick and responsive live chat system that answered my questions in less than a minute.

I started with a simple two-question approach. He wanted to know if users are ready to use the TOR network, and he wanted to know what was being done to stop DNS leaks.

As you will see above and below, they responded quickly, but it felt like a typical response. What followed the salute was another response that appeared to be a replica paste job.

However, once I clarified my questions, I received a better answer.

They responded with an easy statement about the TOR network, and I clarified again that I had asked a second question.

They trained it with a link that allows users to check for DNS leaks.

They did not enter details on how these issues were addressed, but the solution came quickly and was helpful. I gave them definite endorsements for that, especially when you consider where this service was in terms of customer service.

It has improved by leaps and bounds.

2/4 Netflix Servers Worked Properly

PureVPN claims to be on Netflix’s approved list. That is, in fact, much more critical than you would think.

Netflix and VPNs are at war for a couple of years. While once users were able to use a VPN’s tunneling service to access geo-blocked Netflix content from other countries, the streaming service finally realized this and unleashed a blocking system that stops most of the media. VPN.

When we tested multiple PureVPN servers with Netflix, we got a 50% success rate, which is huge!

These are the four PureVPN servers we connect to before checking Netflix:

  • United States: WORKED
  • Canada: WORKED
  • UK: LOCKED
  • Netherlands: NO NL SERVER

Most of the VPNs out there cannot get any functionality from Netflix, therefore the incontrovertible fact that we got two out of 4 to play Netflix content almost even puts PureVPN on our list of Netflix compatible VPNs. That is a huge pen within the limit of this service.

PureVPN Cons

PureVPN is a reasonable service, they need some cool features and a great server selection. But there are a variety of issues that potential users should consider before entrusting Internet security to this service.

Slow Download Speed

NOTE: This speed test was removed in 2019, so I can’t say it’s accurate yet.

Here’s a speed test that I ran on speedtest.net to make sure of the accuracy of this review. Then I connected to PureVPN and ran these tests another time.

PureVPN performance test
Article: PureVPN Review in 2021

Here are our results:

US Server (New York)

  • Ping: 125ms
  • Download: 29.41 Mbps
  • Upload: 29.06 Mbps

EU Server (Amsterdam)

  • Ping: 40ms
  • Download: 35.49 Mbps
  • Upload: 27.29 Mbps

Asia Server (Hong Kong)

  • Ping: 355ms
  • Download: 6.77 Mbps
  • Upload: 3.62 Mbps

UK Server (London)

  • Ping: 53ms
  • Download: 62.48 Mbps
  • Upload: 45.90 Mbps

Their Amsterdam server (the fastest I could find) only hit 35 Mbps out of 100, which is not great.

That’s worrisome when you consider that its main competitor, PIA, offers servers with quite double download speeds at a really similar price.

No Leaks Found

When you’re in the market for a VPN, you’re usually there for a reason and one reason only.

Security.

Whether you want to protect yourself when operating from a public wireless network or avoid censorship laws in your country, personal safety is (and should be) your number one concern when selecting a replacement VPN service.

I tested your service on the subsequent websites and found no leaks:

  • IPLeak.net
  • Perfect-Privacy.com
  • BrowserLeaks
  • IPX.ac
  • VirtualTotal.com

As of 2019 PureVPN is a Certified “No-Log” VPN

PureVPN bills itself as a “zero-logs” VPN.

Since last year, they have been audited by an outside company and are now certified as a “no registration” VPN.

Costs, Plans, and Payment Options

The first and most notable “advantage” about using PureVPN is the label.

They remain one of the most profitable VPNs on the market and offer an exceptional price for users on their 1-year plan.

This is how it all falls apart.

One Year Plan

They also allow customers to get their service with almost every payment method imaginable (even Target gift cards). It is good to determine which untraceable cryptocurrencies are listed as a payment option. this can allow users to pay with an untraceable type of online currency. That is a huge advantage for VPN users who want to stay hidden.

PureVPN has lots of payment options

In addition to its affordable prices and a great selection of payment options, all your purchases are accompanied by a 31-day money-back guarantee.

Do I recommend PureVPN?

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this service to many of the others that we have reviewed.

PureVPN offers a certainly affordable service with a good selection of servers. Their customer service department gave me a positive experience and had a 50% success rate with Netflix. These are all great things that a VPN should strive to do.

I recommend using NordVPN; It is within the same price range, but you get a high-quality product that you can trust (you can read the review here). If you are budget sensitive, try using Surfshark – $1.99/month (check here).
